Waco, McLennan County, Texas


Directions: Take Highway 6 north past Lake Waco, exit on Speegleville Rd.,left across the viaduct. Turn right on Farm Road 3047, left at Oliver Farm, right thru entrance to cemetery past the house, barns & machinery. The Oliver farm was settled in 1854 by William and Margaret Oliver.

Historical Marker:

Evergreen Cemetery

Pioneer Settlers William and Margaret Oliver gave land

in 1860 for a church, school and this cemetery. From 1866 to 1907, families

from the surrounding area assembled here for camp meetings, times of worship, singing and fellowship. In 1941 the meetings were resumed as

annual reunion of the pioneer descendents. In 1957 Evergreen was incorporated as a private cemetery. Major Fred N. Oliver, grandson of

the donors started a Trust Fund for perpetual care. The restored cemetery

now is a place for memorial services to honor Pioneers of this region.

There is also a large marker denoting the Meeting grounds with the following inscription:


Evergreen Methodist Camp Meeting Hallowed Grounds.

The Rev. W.H. Edwards and family tented from 1866 to 1907, 10 days 4th Sun.

July or Aug. for 40 years. He being the first and last camper. There being

20 in family. Church stood 10 feet North and Brush Harbor 60 feet East

where he preached and shouted with the many other campers. In heaven

then and now while the centuries of Eternity roll. His residence was

2 miles west. Honor thy Father and thy Mother. Annual reunion started

4th Sun. June 1941. Cemetery 100 yards east. First grave being Tommie

Edwards 1869. Outstanding Edwards children religiously are, Rev. Willis,

Clarence evangelist singer, Laura missionary to Korea, Lena wife of Rev.

Connor and Lula the beloved. This monument erected May 1, 1945 by Rev.

Enoch Melvin Edwards, youngest son age 67.
