INTRODUCTION

This book begins with the Army Engineer's List of graves which originally were located in eight cemeteries in the area in which Lake Waco was built about 1960-61. Each grave was assigned a number (1 thru 938). Every effort was made to identify the graves and the living next of kin. Stones were to be made for all graves that did not have one. In case a grave could not be identified, the stone bore the inscription "Unknown # ( the number assigned on the sheet). The next of kin could designate the cemetery to which the body was to be moved. In most cases each of these are accounted for in the cemetery assigned. There are about 30 or so graves unaccounted for in the new location. Some credits have been given throughout the book for copying of various cemeteries. Many efforts have gone into the book that are unaccounted. For those who have gone before us and published Vols. I- 3 of McLennan County Cemetery Records, for those who have copied some of the records in this book, we owe our incentive to finish what they had begun. A special thanks to Mrs. Paul Kemp for getting the typing started and to all the time she gave to our project. To Mr. John Usry for the ground-work he has laid in his knowledge of McLennan County Cemeteries and for his compilation of the Fall & Puckett Funeral Home Records, we appreciate his willingness to share both. For all those who contributed and those who supported in other ways, we say thanks. We have made every effort to avoid errors, yet we know there are many that still exist. The Engineer List did not always say what the tomb-stone said. Some stones have been changed since they were earlier copied. Some stones are near impossible to read. Somehow the numbers can all be interchanged in some way or another. We regret the errors, but they are not always ours, though we made our share of them, I'm sure. As the stated aim in our previous volumes, we intend to press on until every cemetery in the county has been recorded. With this volume, we guess about half of the cemeteries have been copied, but many of the larger ones remain. In presenting this volume, we do so with the hope that many will find a missing link of the past recorded herein.
