Waco Daily Examiner, 1878

Tue., Aug. 27 (4-4): James W. Cannon died Monday at his home near Comanche Springs. An old citizen. Remains will be brought to Waco today. Funeral from the residence of Robert Sturgis on North 5th St. , with Masonic rites; also Odd Fellows.

Wed., Aug. 28 (4-2): James W. Cannon was buried yesterday in City Cemetery . A large funeral procession.

Fri., Aug. 30 (4-2): Col. W. A. Fort died in Prairie Des Chien, Wisconsin , yesterday. His only daughter Mary died July 7. Wife was with him on a trip. Son Walter at school in Baltimore . Born LaGrange, Franklin Co., Alabama , in 1826. In 1850, became partner with Maj. W. W. Downs in merchandizing in La Grange . They moved to Waco in 1854. Purchased a farm 4 miles south of Waco on the Brazos. After the war, became partner with Frank Graham in 1866 but Graham died a few months later. Then went in with W. B. Trice until 1869. In 1869, with Geo. W. Jackson as Fort & Jackson. It later became the Waco National Bank. In 1865, married Miss Dionitia Wilson.

Fri., Aug. 30 (4-3): Capt. E. J. Plunkett, age 76, died at Orange, Texas , yes­terday. Father of Walter S. and Thomas Plunkett of Waco . Came to Texas from N. C. in 1836.

Tue., Sept. 3 (4-2): Edward Ledecus suicided Sunday in Sturgis Home, by an overdose of opium. Age about 30; unmarried. Was buried with fire department honors.

Tue., Sept. 3 (4-4): Remains of Col. W. A. Fort arrived in Waco Sunday on a special train, accompanied by his wife and son Walter. Buried in City Ceme­tery , Rev. M. H. Wells, pastor of Third Street Methodist Church officiating.

Sat., Sept. 7 (4-3): Dr. J. W. Calder, general manager of the Dallas & Wichita Railway, was shot and killed yesterday on Elm Street in a quarrel.

Sun., Sept. 8 (4-2): Miss Lucy Place died on the 6th in New Orleans. She was a sister of Mrs. Ed B. Levy of Waco.

Sun., Sept. 8 (4-2): Mrs. Johanna B. Liter, mother of Mrs. W. H. Godber, died at Charleston, Ind. , Saturday the 3rd.

Thue., Sept. 12 (4-3): Isaac Leopold died Sept. 11 in Memphis, Tenn. , of fever. Had gone there to help with sick relatives. They recovered. He died.

Sun., Sept. 15 (4-4): Mayor E. A. Sturgis, having consummated a purchase for the city of the fairground property for cemetery purposes, began the sale of lots. Fifty or more lots 15 x 25 feet had been sold at $25 each. It has 50 acres, and cost $4000. W. C. Dodson, the architect, will survey the lots, drives, etc., starting next week.

Tue., Sept. 17 (4-5): Prof. A. J. Cundiff, son-in-law of Col. J. C. McCrary, died Sept. 15 in New Orleans. He was the principal of the New Orleans Commer­cial College.

Tue. Sept. 17 (4-4): The new cemetery yesterday was visited by a party of men: Mayor Sturgis, Aldermen McLaren and Fallon, Col. McClelland, Mr. Dodson, Mr. Pierce, Capt. McCulloch, and the press. It is a beautiful site.

Wed., Sept. 18 (4-4): There have been no deaths in Waco for several weeks. City sextons see no use for the fair grounds cemetery.

Fri., Sept. 20 (4-5): City Council approved the purchase of the fair grounds property for $4000 from Mr. P. B. Jaudon. The mayor had discussed the coming buy with several members of the council previously.

Fri., Sept. 20 (4-2): John Speer to be hung today. Born Clark Co., Ark. Age 26. John Franklin Speers his full name. Both parents deceased. Father died sixteen years ago; mother died in July of 1877.

Sat., Sept. 21 (4-2): John Speers died yesterday for killing J. S. Pledger on July 13, 1875. Burial in Waco Cemetery.

Tue., Sept. 24 (4-4): Fair grounds buildings advertised for sale October 2, at auction. Proceeds to be applied to the grounds as a city cemetery. Agricultural hall, main exhibition building, and 2 or 3 smaller structures, plus lumber of the stables, stock sheds and cedar posts.

Fri., Sept 27 (4-1): Rev. John Smylie, Presbyterian minister known in Waco, died at his home in Milford, Ellis Co., on the 23rd.

Sun., Sept. 29 (4-5): Mordecai McBoon, old citizens of the Aquilla area, attemp­ted suicide by hanging yesterday. Daughter age 10 cut him down.

Thu., Oct. 3 (4-3): In Memoriam, for Dr. T. D. Mannering, by the Medical Asso­ciation of Waco.

Fri., Oct. 4 (4-5): Aunt Nancy, negro woman aged about 75, and a grandchild aged about 2, were burned to death on Maj. W. W. Downs plantation in their cabin.

Fri., Oct. 4 (4-4): At the Council meeting, the sexton reported five deaths for the month, all white; 2 of natural causes and 3 from unnatural causes.

Tue., Oct. 8 (4-5): Francis Marion Smith died Sunday from a fall in McLaren's livery stable. Was buried yesterday in Waco Cemetery . A nephew of Joseph Smith.

Thu., Oct. 10 (4-3): Mallie Belle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Patterson, died October 9, aged 1 year, 7 days. Funeral from the residence on North 4th today.

Fri., Oct. 11 (4-5): Miss Huberta Turner, daughter of Col W. W. Turner of Mar­lin, age 18, died at her father's residence.

Sun., Oct. 13 (4-5): Mr. J. F. Massman died at the family residence on North 8th on October 12, leaving a wife and 3 children. Burial by the I.O.O.F. from the residence today.

Tue., Oct. 15 (4-2): Dr. B. F. Graves, a druggist, was found Saturday in a dying condition from opium poisoning. Died Monday, age about 37. Came to Waco about two years ago from Ramsey, Illinois . $4000 missing. Foul play suspected. Inquest held.

Thu., Oct. 17 (4-2): Capt. W. F. Hague died yesterday at his home near Robin­sonville. Funeral pending.

Fri., Oct. 18 (4-2): City Council meeting. The Mayor was authorized to exchan­ge 24 acres for the rear portion of the cemetery grounds for 15 acres fronting towards town.

Fri., Oct. 18 (4-1): Capt. W. F. Hague was buried yesterday in the cemetery at Robinsonville. Rev. C. H. Dobbs and Rev. S. A. King officiated.

Sun., Oct. 20 (4-2): The Graves case. Morphine taken by mistake.

Wed., Oct. 23 (4-2): Died at the family residence, on South Third Street, of scarlet fever, Tuesday, October 22, at 1 o'clock p. m., Rose Scott, eldest daughter of R. B. and Alice Parrott, in the third year of her age.

Thu., Oct. 24 (4-3): The remains of little Rose, the bright and beautiful three year old of Mr. and Mrs. Parrott, were yesterday formally interred in the new city cemetery, the first interment on those consecrated grounds.

Sun., Oct. 27 (4-2): Rev. Otis Hackett of Point Celeste, Louisiana, formerly of Waco , died today. Was rector of St. Paul's in Waco for a number of years.

Sat., Nov. 2 (4-1): Mr. T. S. (J. S. ?) Platte, old citizen, died yesterday at his residence on North 6th. Funeral today from the residence.

Sun., Nov. 3 (4-2): Mrs. Ella L. Berkshire, wife of D. A. Berkshire, died Nov. 2, age 25. Married less than a year.

Sun., Nov. 3 (4-3): J. S. Platt was buried yesterday.

Sun., Nov. 3 (4-3): Eucla, age 4 years, died yesterday at the residence of her father, W. M. Stafford, on North 9th. Funeral today.

Thu., Nov. 7 (4-4): George D. Burney, age 23, died Nov. 6th. Funeral today from the family residence, with members of United Friends of Temperace.

Sun., Nov. 10 (4-1): Wiley, infant son of M. E. and Bettie Jones Eagan, age 8 months, died Nov. 9 at their residence on Franklin street. Buried yesterday, with Rev. Hall officiating.

Tue., Nov. 12: Died in this city 1 p.m. Sunday, Thomas Benton, infant son of T. L. and Josephine Smith. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery yesterday.

Fri., Nov. 15 (4-1): Negro child age 2 burned to death in the family cabin 3 miles below town Thursday. Fell into the fireplace.

Sun., Nov. 17 (4-4): Mr. D. T. Frazell died at the McClelland Hotel yesterday. Was buried in the city cemetery. Born in New York 1825. To Texas 8 years ago. Was stock agent for H. & T. C. Ry. several years.

Thu., Nov. 21 (4-2): August Pfeiffer, aged about 30, died Nov. 20. Funeral yesterday from the residence of John Feldhake on North 7th, Rev. F. Von Schlu­embach, pastor of the German Methodist Church , officiating.

Sun., Dec. 1 (4-4): Dr. Fountain Jones died Nov. 30 at his residence on Austin St. , age 49. Funeral today, Rev. Carroll officiating. Dr. Jones was born at Opalousa, La. To Kentucky as a young man, then to Illinois until 1874. To Texas the fall of 1874. Homeopathic physician. Died of pneumonia. Survived by a wife and 5 children; 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Thu., Dec. 5 (4-3): Two children burned to death Wednesday, ages 9 and 11, children of Nathan Hodge, negro, near the mouth of the Bosque.

Fri., Dec. 6 (4-1): Lizzie Fry Sturgis, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Sturgis, aged 2 years, died Dec. 5th. Funeral today from the family residence, 4th and Clay.

Fri., Dec. 6 (4-2): William R. Thompson died yesterday in a saloon on Austin street , shot by Ben Galis. Age about 23. Came to Waco from Austin about a month ago. Inquest held.

Sat., Dec. 7 (4-4): Dr. R. S. Garner, formerly of Waco, died of typhoid at Decatur Saturday last.

Thu., Dec. 12 (4-3): Obituary: Mrs. Agnes K. Taylor, wife of Rev. H. L. Taylor and daughter of Davis and Patience B. Gurley, born Franklin Co., Ala., June 19, 1830 and died Dec. 11, 1878, at the residence of her brother, Capt. D. R. Gurley of Waco. Her clothing caught fire Nov. 29. Married to H. L. Taylor Nov. 23, 1848 by J. D. Shaw.

Thu., Dec. 12 (4-1): Funeral of Mrs. A. K. Taylor from the residence of Caot. Gurley Thursday.

Fri., Dec. 20 (5-2): Guy, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Scott, age 2 mos., died Dec. 12. Funeral from the residence on North 4th today.

Fri., Dec. 27 (5-3): Inquest held at Meridian. Tom Harrell and Mart Horrell died December 15 in the Bosque Co. jail from wounds. Mort Horrell had eleven wounds, and Tom had five, by parties unknown.

Sat., Nov. 12 (4-1): Mrs. Lula Shealey, 21, died yesterday of congestion. Funeral today, Rev. Dr. Carroll officiating; burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Came to Waco with her husband, from Dadeville, Ala.

Sat., Nov. 12 (4-2): New undertaking firm of Stephenson, Tibbs & Steiner.

Sun., Nov. 27 (4-1): Lee Powers, merchant of Harrison Station, died in Marlin Monday at the residence of his sister, Mrs. A. E. Watson.

Tue., Nov. 29 (4-3): The remains of J. S. McClain Jr., who died at the resi­dence of his relative, Mr. J. Q. Ayers, Saturday, were taken to Perry to the home of his parents by William Anderson the undertaker. Funeral at the resi­dence of J. S. McClain Sr., Rev. John McClain officiating. Burial there.

Fri., Dec. 2 (4-1): There were 26 burials in the city cemeteries in November.

Fri., Dec. 2 (4-2): Beulah D., daughter of R. B. and R. J. Jablonowski, age 15, died yesterday of malaria. Funeral today at Second Street Presbyterian church.

Fri., Dec. 2 (4-3): Henry Daniels, 34, died Thursday at his residence. Was colored; attache of 0 K. Barber Shop. Resident of Waco 12 years; residence at North 5th. Leaves wife and 2 children. Funeral today. Member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge.

Sat., Dec. 10 (4-2): Comments on Waco cemeteries. It is claimed that there are 7000 buried in the old city cemetery. William Anderson says he can identi­fy and locate 2500 graves.

Tue., Dec. 13 (4-2): List of Waco telephone numbers, about 80 in all.

Thu., Dec. 15 (4-3): Dick Goode, a wood hauler, yesterday was badly injured in an accident on North 4th street. His mules became unmanageable and he was thrown out of the wagon.

Thu., Dec. 15 (4-1): Mrs. Mary E. Hill died Dec. 4th at the residence of her brother-in-law, John Jinkins. Funeral today.

Fri., Dec. 16 (4-1): George W. Darwin, 49, died Dec. 14 at his residence on North 4th, of malaria.

Fri., Dec. 16 (4-1): Mrs. M. H. Standifer died yesterday in Waco. Funeral today.

Sat., Dec. 17 (4-3): Mrs. M. L. Standefer, daughter of Judge Cobb, died on Thursday. Grew up in Waco. Leaves a husband, who is in charge of the suspension bridge; also 3 children. Burial at Oakwood.

Sat., Dec. 17 (4-3): J. C. Bomar died yesterday. A printer and a member of Waco Typographical Union 188. Born at Knoxville, Tennessee. Came to Waco last March. To be buried today at the Catholic cemetery, Father Badelon officia­ting.

Sat., Dec. 17 (4-3): James Andrew Richardson died in Waco yesterday. Funeral today from the residence of Dr. W. H. Wulkes.

Tue., Dec. 20 (3-6): The remains of the late Mrs. Egan are to be disinterred at the Catholic cemetery today and shipped to New Orleans.

Wed., Dec. 21 (4-2): Tom Padgitt, infant son of Will and Lizzie Denison Ross, died Monday at the home of Mrs. Ross in Belton. Their first-born.

Fri., Dec. 23 (4-2): A negro was killed yesterday by buckshot wounds on Slau­ter's farm.

Sat., Dec. 24 (4-2): J. H. Renty of Bosqueville fell dead Thursday.

Sun., Dec. 25 (4-4): John Morris, a gambler known in Waco, died in Fort Worth a few days ago. He was killed.

Tue., Dec. 27: The M. K. T. Ry. entered Waco this week over the new bridge. Tue., Dec. 27 (4-2): Two negroes were killed. One body was found near Reagan.

Tue., Dec. 27 (4-1): John Hubert, age 13 months, son of John A. and Lucy C. Kennedy, died Monday. Remains to be shipped to Pittsburg.

Tue., Dec. 27 (4-1): Willie, age 5 years, son of Dr. and Mrs. William Osborne, died Dec. 26th. Funeral yesterday.

Sun., Jan. 1 (3-4): Mrs. Will Trent died on Dec. 27th at Whitney.

Tue., Jan. 3 (4-2): A negro named Dallas Ford was killed by a Missouri Pacific train Sunday. He tried to board a train and missed his footing. This was the first railroad fatality in Waco proper.

Wed., Jan. 4 (4-3): Mrs. Lula E. Tucker, wife of W. L. Tucker, died yesterday at the family residence on South 3rd, age 25. Born in East Texas; lived in Waco nearly all her life. Married about 3 years ago. Survived by husband and a son. Burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

Wed., Jan. 4 (4-3): John McGregor died yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. M. Thotley at McGregor Springs. Was an uncle of Dr. G. C. McGregor of Waco; and a native of Scotland, age 73. Emigrated to North Carolina, later to Texas.

Tue., Jan. 10 (4-2): Clarence, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hawvichorst, aged 2, died Jan. 5th at the family residence on South 6th. Funeral today from the residence.

Tue., Jan. 10 (4-2): Miss Alice B. Fleming died at Navasota on Jan. 3.

Sat., Jan. 14 (4-1): Mrs. E. M. Layton died yesterday at the residence of R. G. Pidcocke. Funeral at Episcopal church today.

Thu., Jan. 19 (4-3): Minnie Anderson, alias "French Minnie," died yesterday.

A resident of Waco several years. Born in Louisiana. Attended by Father Badelon.

Thu., Jan. 19 (4-2): Miss Virginia Lee Jablonowski, age 18, died Jan. 18 at the residence of her parents. Funeral today from Second Street Presbyterian church. Second bereavement in recent days. Miss Beula, 16, died then.

Sun., Jan. 22 (3-7): Funeral yesterday for Ashby Gribble at the Second Presby­terian church.

Fri., Jan. 27 (3-7): George F. Skinner was found in a dying condition in the Frazier building, East Waco, a week ago last Tuesday. He is still at the hospital.

Fri., Jan. 27 (4-2): Mrs. Sara Leopold, 76, died Jan. 26th at the residence of her son-in-law, R. Lessing. Funeral yesterday from her late residence; burial at First Street Hebrew Rest. Mother of Mrs. R. Lessing, Mrs. A. Henry and Mr. Louis Leopold.

Wed., Feb. 1 (4-3): Obituary: Lula Oliver Tucker was born at Jefferson, Texas, Sept. 23, 1887, and died at Waco Jan. 2, 1882 (sic). To Waco with her parents, Hon. J. W. and Mrs. W. L. Oliver, as a young girl. Educated Waco Female Col­lege. Joined M. E. Church South July 2, 1870. Married Feb. 13, 1879, to W. L. Tucker of the drug firm of Tucker & Willis.

Thu., Feb. 2 (4-3): Little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Plunkett yesterday drank some carbolic acid. Age about 14 months. Recovery doubtful.

Sun., Feb. 5 (4-4): Annie N., daughter of Robert T. and Annie S. Dennis of Waco died Feb. 3. Buried yesterday.

Wed., Feb. 8 (4-4): Major D. W. Washburn and George W. Stahl and Mrs. Stahl were reported killed yesterday in a railway hand-car accident. Major Washburn was an engineer, and Stahl the contractor of construction. They were returning to Waco from the end of track. Later reports said Stahl was killed, and Washburn injured.

Sat., Feb. 11 (4-4): Funeral yesterday for the late W. W. Stoll, wife and son, at the residence of Judge Leland on 3rd Street, Rev. B. H. Carroll of the 1st Baptist Church officiating. Remains were shipped to New Jersey for burial.

Thu., Feb. 16 (4-1): Man found dead in the Missouri Pacific section house.

Fri., Feb. 17 (4-3): Frank Knipe and S. E. Skiles, a laborer from Tennessee, were found dead.

Thu., Feb. 23 (4-1): Mrs. Pace, daughter of Judge and Mrs. J. M. Maxey, died at Huntsville on the 18th.

Fri., Feb. 24 (4-2): Mrs. Clark, a destitute woman, died yesterday. To be buried by the County. Left young baby about 10 days old and 2 older children.

Sat., Feb. 25 (3-7): Mrs. Clark was buried yesterday by the County.

Sat., Feb. 25 (4-3): Reuben King, colored, drowned yesterday in the river when his boat upset. Body not found.

Thu., Mar. 2 (4-4): Hon. S. H. Owens of California, Mo., brother of Dr. S. A. Owens of Waco, died last week.

Sun., Mar. 5 (4-2): W. W. Smith was shot yesterday at the Shoo Fly or Garrett's

Fri., Mar. 10 (4-2): Mart M. Vaughan was found dead on the bank of the Tehuacana yesterday. Was in town Wednesday.

Fri., Mar. 10 (4-3): Negro woman named Jane Anthony was shot and killed March 2nd by Jeff Caufield, colored. He was charged with murder.

Sat., Mar. 11 (4-2): Three people dead: John Castedo, section hand for the Texas Central, was found dead in the city, apparently struck by a train. Had been drinking. John Cotean died at Troy in Bell county. Jumped off a train in motion and fell under the wheels.

Sat., Mar. 11 (4-1): Mrs. Francis O. Flournoy, wife of Col. William M. Flour­noy, died March 10 at the family residence on North 5th. Funeral from the residence Saturday, with Rev. J. D. Shaw officiating.

Sat., Mar. 11 (4-1): Mary Elva Winsett, 32, died today. Funeral Sunday from the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Winsett, on North 5th.

Sun., Mar. 12 (4-1): The body of an infant was found Saturday below the 3rd street bridge.

Sat., Mar. 18 (3-7): Jeff Caufield, colored, was acquitted in court of killing Mary Anthony, col.

Sun., Mar. 19 (4-3): Mrs. Rebekah Douglas, 75, died March 18th at the residence of Mrs. E. S. Edgar. Funeral today at the 2nd St. Presbyterian church; burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

Sun., Mar. 19 (4-3): Thomas A. Hamilton, 16, died Saturday at the residence in Waco. Funeral today from the residence. A carpenter.

Tue., Mar. 21 (4-4): Obituary: Mrs. Rebecca Douglass, who died in Waco Saturday, at the residence of her daughter Mrs. E. S. Edgar in South Waco, was born at Baltimore, Md., April 25, 1806. Was 75. Maiden name was Fulton. Brother was governor of Arkansas and U. S. Senator. He died years ago. At age 10, with family from Maryland to Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee. At about age 17, was married to Alfred H. Douglass, a soldier in the War of 1812. She drew a pension for his service. Husband died in 1865? In 1852, to Seguin, Texas, afterwards to Lockhart and LaGrange, finally to Waco. Wed for 47 years. Member of the Presbyterian Church in Waco 1867.

Sun., Apr. 16 (4-3): Mrs. J. Q. Ayers is in a dying condition.

Tue., Apr. 18 (4-1): Mary Mory, wife of J. Q. Ayers, and daughter of Capt. Jack McClain of Perry, died April 16th at her residence in the Ross Addition. Burial yesterday from the First Baptist church.

Fri., Apr. 21 (4-3): List of Texas veterans who died before 1882.

Sat., Apr. 22 (4-3): John Archer, infant son of Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Beville, died. Funeral from residence today.

Tue., May 2 (4-4): J. B. Pogue was found dead yesterday at his residence. An Alabamaian; resided in McLennan county about 14 years. Aged 52. Burial today from his residence on Franklin, at Oakwood Cemetery, Rev. Rufus C. Burleson officiating.

Tue., May 2 (4-3): Samuel Corpew came to Waco about 1867 from East Texas. Was sick. According to his father-in-law, Senator Hart of Titus county, Cor­pew died in Waco, and was probably buried in the cemetery at 3rd street. A Mason. His mother is looking for his burial place to erect a marker.

Tue., May 2 (4-1): John H. Davis, 68, died at the Taylor House May 2. Funeral today from his late residence, burial at Oakwood.

Tue., May 2 (4-3): Six-year-old son of J. Q. Ayers is very ill.

Wed., May 3 (3-6): The remains of J. B. Pogue were buried yesterday. Also, the remains of John H. Davis were buried yesterday.

Gideon Blackburn and entered the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. Preached in Mississippi, Kentucky, Illinois, and Texas. First wife died early and he married Miss Lucy W. Railey of Woodford Co., Ky. Two children survive: Mrs. Burton of South 2nd, and Rev. S. A. King, D. D., pastor of 2nd Street Presbyterian Church. Died yesterday at the home of his son. Tue., Aug. 8 (4-2): A Tribute, to Mrs. Catherine E. Stonebraker, born Aug. 27, 1827, Montgomery Co., Maryland. Second daughter of William and Catherine E. Pearre. In 1863 her parents, two sisters and a brother died. She was married to Dr. A. Stonebraker Sept. 9, 1856, at the residence of her father. Dr. Stonebraker entered the Confederate Army as a volunteer in the Stonewall Jackson division. To Baltimore, Md., after the war. In 1876 they moved to Waco. She died the 3rd ultimo. Survived by her husband, two sons, and a daughter.

Wed., Aug. 9 (4-2): A party of four: Clarence and Willie Wallace, and John and T. Sparks, returned from a search for the body of Cliff Wallace in the Colorado river near Austin. It was not found.

Fri., Aug. 11 (3-4): Mrs. S. A. Fuller died yesterday of black jaundice on the North Bosque.

Thu., Oct. 19 (4-2): Rosa Struve, on the railway train enroute from Beacher, Illinois, to San Antonio, became ill and died near Abbott Station. Anderson Bros. of Waco were notified by telegram to receive the body at Waco. She was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Struve, and by Mr. A. W. Oliver, a friend. The remains were shipped back to Illinois.

County treasurer for several years. Funeral today from the family residence on South 4th; buried at Oak-wood with Masonic rites; also the Odd Fellows.

Thu., Jan. 11 (4-1): Mr. L. Griffin died yesterday of pneumonia at the city hospital. Funeral today, burial in Easo Waco cemetery.

Fri., Jan. 12 (3- ): Burial yesterday of Mrs. Ada McMullen, wife of Thos. McMullen and daughter of W. C. Clinton. Age about 30.

Fri., Jan. 12 (4-1): Mrs. Francis Ray, mother of Mrs. M. M. Boggess of Waco, died in Hill county on the 7th, and was buried there. Age 67. Resident of Hill county since about 1853.

Sat., Jan. 13 (4-2): Frankie Webb was shot yesterday near 2nd & Jackson and died in the home of Annie Brown. It seems that a pistol discharged accidentally. Mrs. Mattie Moore the proprietress. The pistol was owned by B. F. Tutt.

Wed., Jan. 17 (3-1): Miss Emma Campbell of Cherokee county died Monday night at Waco University, where she was a pupil. Pneumonia.

Wed., Jan. 17 (4-2): Funeral at the Baptist church today for Miss Emma Campbell, with Dr. B. H. Carroll officiating.

Wed., Jan. 17 (4-2): W. S. Bailey died Monday nidnight. Funeral today from the residence; burial at Oakwood.

Sat., Jan. 20 (4-2): Hugh Houston was shot yesterday at the bawdy Houston House and died. The shooting apparently was done by William J. Wright, who was with Sol DeGraffenreid and W. E. Jackson.

Tue., Jan. 30 (3-1): Funeral for Charles Decherd, negro, said to be aged 98, down Austin avenue to the cemetery.

Tue., Jan. 30 (4-2): J. Henry Yeates died Sunday. Born Oct. 1846, and lived in Waco 13 years. An auctioneer, and member of the fire department. He was later exempt. Survived by wife and 4 children. Funeral yesterday from the residence on Webster, to Oakwood Cemetery; the fire department attending.

Thu., Feb. 1 (3-1): J. F. McKissick of East Waco died of congestive chill.

Thu., Feb. 1 (4-2): Mervin, eldest son of Gen. and Mrs. L. S. Ross, died yes­terday, age nearly 19. Funeral today, burial at Oakwood.

Sun., Feb. 4 (3-1): Major A. Hays of Morgan died Friday and was buried yester­day, age 45. Born in Tennessee.

Tue., Feb. 6 (4-1): Mrs. Goldsmith died Sunday, survived by a husband.

Tue., Feb. 20 (4-1): Col. J. B. Morrow died Saturday at his home near Axtell. His son and daughter, Doc and Lucy, died Sunday. All of pneumonia. Mr. Morrow was buried Sunday, son and daughter yesterday.

Tue., Feb. 27 (4-2): James C. Prather, 33, died on the 25th. Born Henry Co., Tenn. To Texas in 1854 with his father. Lived in McLennan Co. since then. A brother of William L. Prather of Waco. He and his brother married sisters. Survived by widow and 1 child. A farmer. Funeral yesterday. Burial Oakwood.

Wed., Feb. 28 (4-1): Mrs. A. B. Moody, resident of lower McLennan Co., died a few days ago. He was a Mason, and was buried by the Moody lodge of Masonry.

Sun., Mar. 4 (3-2): Julius Weslow, brother of Mrs. A. Cohn of Waco, died at Albany, Georgia.

Wed., Mar. 7 (4-2): Major George Barnard died yesterday. Born Hartford, Conn., Sept. 18, 1818, was over 64. To Galveston at age 20, then to Houston. Was on the Santa Fe Expedition in 1841, and was captured. Released after 9 months. To McLennan Co. in 1844, and established a trading post on the Tehuacana. In 1850, married daughter of Capt. Shapley P. Ross. In 1857, brought the first stock of goods to Waco. Funeral today, with Masonic rites.

Sat., Mar. 17 (4-2): P. W. Woodlief, 74 yrs. 8 mos., died March 13. Born in Virginia. Was a resident of Waco for 50 years. Funeral from the residence of his son, Henry L. Woodlief. Reported to have died at New Orleans.

Tue., Mar. 20 (4-1): J. Calhoun McLennan, 32, died at South Bosque on the 18th of consumption. Son of John McLennan. Buried yesterday.

Thu., Mar. 22 (4-2): Capt. T. F. Austin of White Rock died of heart disease at a residence on North 5th yesterday, age 64. A Mason. The remains were sent to Ross Station and to White Rock for burial.

Sat., Mar. 31 (4-2): Young A. T. Moreland, who was cut by Bell the hackman last Wednesday, is apparently dying. Bell was arrested.

Sun., Apr. 1 (4-2): A. T. Moreland died yesterday in the Central City Hotel. Was cut in an altercation with hackman Bill Bell last Wednesday. Was buried in the old cemetery.

Tue., Apr. 3 (4-1): Jimmie Reno, 14 mos., son of Officer James W. Renfro, died yesterday at the residence of Dan Morris. Funeral today.

Fri., Apr. 6 (4-1): J. M. Bedwell, 38, died on the 4th at his home 5 miles below Waco, of meningitis. Funeral yesterday, and burial in the East Waco cemetery.

Fri., Apr. 4 (4-1): Herod Jackson, 61, died Wednesday at his residence on Jack-son street. Burial yesterday.

Tue., Apr. 10 (4-4): Capt. John Sparks died yesterday of wounds received while arresting two men. Came to McLennan Co. as a youth. Enlisted in the C.S.A. under Capt. P. F. Ross. Was in the Rangers after the war. Died at Purdon. Sur­vived by wife and several children. Resided at Corsicana, where he moved a few months ago.

Thu., Apr. 19 (3-2): Miss Julia Patterson, daughter of Mr. P. Patterson, died at Axtell April 17. Funeral yesterday from the residence of J. M. Patterson, and was buried at Oakwood. Family formerly of Waco.

Fri., Apr. 20 (4-4): The wife of Ransom L. Moore died yesterday at his home, of heart disease. Nee Miss Fanny Neil, daughter of Alf Neil who was killed by a negro.

Sun., Apr. 22 (4-3): Gabrielle Black, wife of John Black and mother of L. B. Black, died yesterday. Funeral today; burial at Oakwood. L. B. Black is the cashier of the Waco National Bank.

Sun., Apr. 22 (4-3): Vaughan Sladen died Saturday at the Battle House on Washington street, aged 10 years. Funeral today. His parents will take the remains to Champaign, Illinois, for burial.

Thu., Apr. 26 (4-2): Joseph Miller, aged 10 or 11 years, was shot by a pistol in the hands of a playmate yesterday and badly injured in the chest.

Sat., Apr. 28 (4-2): Thadeus Lee Wallace died yesterday of congestion, age 5 years and 5 months. Funeral yesterday from the residence of Major M. E. McLaren at 9th & Washington. Burial at Odd Fellows cemetery.

Sun., Apr. 29 (4-2): Ella Arnold, an actress, died yesterday. Daughter of Dick Parker, proprietor of the American Theatre in New York and wife of Billy Devere. Delirium tremens and mental trouble.

Fri., May 11 (3-1): G. R. Williams, colored, age 20, died yesterday at the residence of L. G. Jordan. He came here from Jacksonville, and was working for C. C. McCulloch and attending school. The remains were sent to Jackson­ville.

Fri., May 11 (4-1): Mrs. Jane Wilson died in East Waco on the 9th, age 72. Burial yesterday.

Fri., May 11 (4-1): Miss Amelia Mitscher died on the 10th. Funeral today from the residence of Chas. Kophan on North 1st.

Sat., May 12 (3-2): Mrs. Lizzie McClelland, wife of S. A. McClelland, died in East Waco May 9th. Was a resident of Bold Springs, age 21. Daughter of William Glasgow. Survived by her husband and 2 children. One of her children, Roxy, died of measles only 3 hours before her mother, at the home of her grandfather, William Glasgow, on May 9th. Both were buried together.

Sat., May 12 (4-1): Oscar Stevens, age 18 months, youngest child of J. E. and S. E. Stevens of Colorado City, died yesterday at the residence of J. C. Pet­tigrew. Burial in old cemetery today.

Sun., May 13 (4-1): Mrs. Jane Hayes, age 76, died on the 12th. Born Rockingham Co., Va. Resident of Waco for the past 25 years. Funeral today from the resi­dence of her daughter, Mrs. Mattie Howe, on South 6th.
