INTRODUCTION

A person doing genealogical research in the Waco area has several sources available. One of these is the collection of early Waco newspapers on micro-film at the Waco-McLennan County Library. However, unless the searcher has the exact date of a death, for instance, it is very difficult to locate the needed newspaper item without an extensive search, unless there is an index. It is the purpose of this book to provide that index.

A careful search was made of the early Waco newspapers on microfilm at the library, for any kind of report on deaths in the Waco and McLennan County area. These death reports were usually not copied word for word, but the essential data of genealogical and biographical interest were abstracted. In addition to actual death reports, many items of associated interest were abstracted. These include funeral and burial announcements, cards of thanks relating to bereavement, probates, murder indictments and verdicts, births, serious illness, train wrecks, information about cemeteries, early airships, reported gold strikes, bawdy reservations, etc. Page and column numbers were noted (in parenthesis), to facilitate reference back to the newspaper when desired.

It was found that the newspaper collection at the library is not complete, but has many gaps, and no newspapers for Waco before 1874 were found. A search was made in the Texas Collection at Baylor University, and at the Barker History Collection at the University of Texas in Austin . Some of the missing newspapers were found in these collections. These also were carefully searched and death reports were abstracted. A visit was made to the Dallas Public Library, but with no success in filling the gaps. Also, the book, "A Union List of Newspapers in the Libraries of the Fort Worth-Dallas Major Resource Centers," edited by Mary Aleta Wittenmyer, was checked. The principal gaps that remained are:

Jan. 1, 1875 to July 30, 1875

Jan. 1, 1979 to Dec. 31, 1879

Jan. 1, 1880 to Dec. 31, 1880

Jan. 1, 1881 to Nov. 12, 1881

May 9, 1888 to July 5, 1888

Sept. 17, 1894 to Dec. 31, 1894

Jan. 1, 1895 to Apr. 3, 1895

During many of the early years of Waco , several newspapers were being published simultaneously, and the collection at the Waco-McLennan County Library has alternate publications for several years. In the research for this book, the compiler tried to select what seemed to be the newspaper with the best and most complete death news. Later, a further search was made, using one of the competing newspapers. An effort was made to avoid duplication of items copied in the initial search.

This compilation contains approximately 9000 death reports and other items. The names of the deceased persons are listed in the index to this book. The index also shows the names of some of the survivors living in the Waco area.
