Costley in the west end of Hamolton county Texas

Wednesday July the 8th AD 1914- Opened up Some what cool with a clean blew Sky wind blowing Softley from the north East The familey arose from there bed of Slumber Some what Earley this morning and after getting prepared for work a part of the familey went to work and prepared the morning meal whilst the remainder of the familey taken care of the Stock and when through they returned too the house and prepared them Selves for there morning meal and when Served and placed on the table and announced readey to be eat the familey that was left at home to care for the place Seated them Selves too the breakfast table then portaken of there morning meal and when through and the breakfast table cared for then each of the familey returned too there respectful labors through the day whilst the writer was engaged in recording what was done through out the day as Laura Edney and Nelley Costley went to hoe for one of there neighbors to day in his cotton Some distance from home but went the trip in there buggy whilst Mrs Mattie Costley and her neighbor woman Mrs ___ did the washing of the wearing clothes for the familey and the old man Costley was left to keep up the odds and ends that was left dow and as to my wife being a invalid is left to take care of her Self unless She should nead help then one and all turnes in too meet her wants and desire in general. Now whilst i am Setting and writing the above i look out at the window of J M Costley residence and can See a large land Scape of land and contunous row of mountains that i have trevailed over and have eat and Slept with my Saddle blanket for my bed and my Saddle for my pillow hunting and Search for the redman at large and a maney time we would capture them at the Indian gap from which i can view from a distance of five miles from the place where i now Sit and See where we use to lay in wait for the comanche indians to pass through with our neighbor horses captured from there range the over night there for the purpose of recapturing them again which we did nine times out of evry ten and also got the Scalps of maney one off of the indians head and aften recaptured Several Scalps taken off of the americans that was killed by the Savages in the lower counties on there raid upon the americans but for all that they would up and come again evry full moon of the month through out the year round the Same thing over and over So it Seemed to be no end too there visets down in the lower counties upon the american people and there property and Scalps also there children as prisenors to Sell at the trading houses but it Seems to me that that day is past and gone and a nother tribe has appeared in a more bolder manner that the first this last tribe wants all that you have and then to debay you from eating and drinking what you So ever choose to eat and drink therefore Such resolutions will be very apt to cause much blood Shed before it comes to a perfect Settlement of affares as it once were. at or near 35 minutes past too oclock this evening the thermometer registered at 96 Degrees tempature very warm and but little air Stiring at this writing but the elements are mingled with calcarious clouds and the wind Springs up at intervals which makes it Some pleasanter all a long the line now as the heet was great this evening. we had too encounter with driving a lot of cattle out of the feel (field) and turning them back a way out of the way to keep them from troubling any more then returned too the house and taken a rest and at the Same time it began to thunder in the West and a cloud Sprung up in that direction and passed a round too the South and then too the east with contunuous thunder and a heavey Shower as we could See it raining from J.M. Costleys residence now as the day has about past away we will do up the nights Schores. then eat our evening meal and take our usual rest and depart too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest is the desire of the writer it Seems at this writing that it might rain yet before night getting dark and clowdy and much in appearance of rain W.E.Costley at my Son J.M.Costley in Hamelton County Texas

Costley prepared himself for the trip to Comanche town at the county seat of Comanche County on buisiness that had to be attended too all the same whilst the writer acompanied him to Comanche Town and back again as i were anxious to see the place as i have not seen the town and surrounding country since the fall of 1866- which time i and Press Brewer taken a trip too Erath county too the county town site Stephenvill to mill said town located on North Bosque in Erath County Texas part of the County being quite Sandy whilst other parts being chocolate with some sand mixed in with the chocolate dirt which makes it a great deal pleasanter to travel over, the mud does not stick like the old black mud of these eastern counties like Coryell and McLennan County Texas and others fronting North and South in evry direction and many of them too are a mixture of soil. i am of thee opinion that this is going to be a nice cool day after arriving at the place we then proceeded to wonder over the Town in Surch of Mr John Dodson of that place and after So long a while we come across his residence and found his familey all at home with the exception of J D Dotson adn wife and his baby boy the old man was out at work at his profession as he was a Pointer by trade and his wife had just returned from Waco where She had been visiting of her relatives and friends but in corse of a short while the propriortier of the house returned home then we had a good old time telling over our trials and troubles and tribulations of this vile world since we last seen each other and talked over all the pleasures that we all so seen in our travels during our recollection then throwed them on the scales and wayed them and when come to reviewed the virdick and just come out even therefore we then considered the virdict just and Subned(?) our Selves too the Same a bout that time we were envited to our evening meal by the land lady of the house So we Seated our Selves too the Suppertable then enjoy a Supupsirus(?) meals vituals at our old friends Mr and Mrs J D Dobsons, after eating of our evening meal and the evening table and contents all cared far we then seated our selve on the South porch of Mr and Mrs Dotson with them and familey and along old fashion chat of the last past history of our lives but when come to testify of the cruel acts that the older brother of the Cunninghams and the writer and a many old brother did in the Earley settles of the west i am some what fearful we will have a great deal to answer as we have done a many cruel deed maccacreeing of the red man and there property and other deeds in taken there country a way from them and what we found them in possession of the red man what do we know of farmer days but God led them people over intoo this county and put them in possession of the land and country to do as they liked with it and it seemed that they turned loose on the tribe to distroy them and the free writes of there count(r)y them people were the hand works of the lord and the american people should if they wanted there hunting arounds should then that have baught would have settled the whole difficulty and evry thing would have past off quitly and peacebly but in stead of that it has caused a great deal of deaths and blood shed of father mother sisters and Brothers and relatves be sides and left the country in a deploreable condition all along the line all the same, now when we had talked it all over we then departed to our beds of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer and to be able to far look out for the length and breath of the city to morrow morning W.E.Costley at J.M.
