Wednesday February the 4th AD 1914 opened up quite a cool damp cloudey morning much in appearance of rain Sleet or Snow wind from the North blowing feble earley in the morning Thermometer at or near half past Seven oclock this morning Registered at 48 Degrees tempature The familey arose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in the fire place in our bedroom as it was quite cool i then Proceeded too the lot then fed my horse after getting through i then returned too our Kitchen and renewed the fire in our cook Stove then went to work and prepare the morning meal with the help of my wife after getting of it Served and placed on the table we portaken of the Same and when through and the breakfast table and contents cared far we moved in too our bed room and Seated our Selves down by a good fire as it felt comfortable too the old people as there were Such a change in the weather and after taken a good warm i then walk down too the farmers bank and presented a check on the Farmers bank from Ed Costley of Waco for fifty Dollars then taken forty of that and paid on a note that I owed John B Nichols and company for good then paid Lee Hickerson fore dollars for water as he run the water works in Crawford Texas in 1912 and 1913 i then Paid Bob Coffman three Dollars for a new pare of Shalves that he attached too my buggy Earley in the winter i then paid old man Shoffner too Dollars i owed him and i also owed Alex Armstrong 25 cents and i paid that amount to him and had Six bits left out of the fifty Dollars drawed out of the farmers bank of Crawford by that time it was 12-oclock noon i then returned home fed my horse again then eat my noon meal when through i then caught then geered my horse hitched him too my cart then drove over too the Bosque break for a load of wood after arriving at place i dismounted from my cart tied my horse to a tree i then walked across the creek in too Ed Costleys field to See John Mulican on buisiness as he had the farm rented and was plowing the field just across the Bosque creek after getting through with him i then returned back on the South Side of the Bosque cut and loaded on my cart with a load of wood then drove for my place in the town of Crawford after arriving at my place i drove in too my lot then unloaded my wood taken my horse loose from the cart taken the geer off of him gave him water then turned him in too my garden to pick a round a while i then went to work and prepared night wood for my fire place in our bedroom also for the cook Stove in the dining room and brought it in doors as it had the appearance of raining as it were thick cloudey all over the Elements i then prepared feed in his traugh then returned too the house we then eat our evening meal as my wife had it Served and placed on the table and announced readey to be eat after we were through and the Suppertable and contents cared far we then moved in too our bedroom for a Short rest and after resting for a bit i went to work and recorded the labor done by my wife and my Self during the day and when through we departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good rest to night is the desire of the old folks at home WE Costley at home in Crawford

Thursday February the 5th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey morning with a mist of raining falling quite damp in the form of a big fog falling Thermometer at or near Eight oclock this morning registered at 50 Degrees tempature. The familey as usual rose from there bed of repose Some what late this morning and after arising from our bed of rest the writer renewed the fire in our bed room in the fire place as it was quite damp this morning i then fed the horse after getting through i returned too our Kitchen then renewed the fire in the cook Stove and went to work and assisted my wife in prepareing of our morning meal after getting of it Served and placed on the table we Seated our Selves too the breakfast table then portaken of our morning meal after we were through my wife went to work then put the breakfast table and contents all in good Shape again whilst the writer recorded the above then watered and Staked my horse out on the Streets to graze and walked down in to Town to See what was going on and after arriving at the place i Started to go too i found but few people in town i then remained in the place for Some bit then returned home and finished writing my letter that i had Started to write to Ida and Ada Costley at Waco Texas and after getting of it wrote i then taken and mailed the Same and returned back too my place then eat my dinner that my wife had prepared for the too old people to day after we were through i rested for a Short while then taken my plow point off of my one horse plow and taken it to Bob Coffman to harpen after getting of it Sharpened i brought it home and put the point of the plow on the plow then caugh and geered my horse hitched him too my turning plow and went to plowing in my garden braking of it up and began at the South Side of the garden and plowed one land 8 Steps wide the length of the garden 60 Steps in length, begining late in the evening then turned out gave my horse water. then taken him too the lot taken the geers off of him then fed him, after getting through i returned too the house washed my hands and face and combed my head we then Eat our evening meal prepared by my (wife) and when through my wife went to work and put the Supper table and contents all in good Shape again we then moved in too our bedroom for a Short rest and during of our rest spell the writer recorded the above or the greater portion of it we then departed too our bed or repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the old people to night W.E.Costley at home in the town of Crawford

Friday February the 6th AD 1914 - Opened up quite______ wind from the North freezen cold Thermometer at or near half past Seven oclock this morning registered at 34 Degrees tempature the familey arose Some what late this morning and after getting prepare for work the writer then prepared a fire in the cook Stove and ground and put the coffee on to make also put the bread on to bake then fed my horse after getting through i returned too the Kitchen and assisted my wife in finishing up our morning meal and after getting of it Served and placed on the table and announced readey to be eat we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our morning meal when through and the breakfast table and contents cared far the writer then walked down in to town and before Starting i noticed that the Thermometer registered at 52 Degrees tempature that was what it Registered when i first arose this morning and 8 oclock when i went to Town from which the State(ment) made in the above line Shoes (shows) that the norther blew up at 8-oclock and when i returned back home the clock had just Struck nine in the fore noon of today and there was Such a change that the Thermeter run down to 34 Degrees in one hour. and kept getting colder and colder up too about three oclock in the (day)it become Some warmer as the Sun turned to the west in the evening pirfectley clear clear the most of the day and at or near too oclock in the after noon we eat our noon meal the writer went over across the Street to William Ellis and got Some mustard greens for our diner as they had cooked a lot of mustard greens for there dinner after returning home we then eat our noon meal when through and the dinner table and contents cared far we then taken our Seats in front of a good fire and taken a good warm as it was very cold in deed and Spent the balance of the day by a good fire as it continued freezing cold up till the day past away and at night fall the thermometer had gone down from 52 Degrees to 30 Degrees and Still going below as it was growing very cold at or near five oclock this evening i prepared wood for the fire place in our bedroom and become very cold in doining So and layed it on my galery to be handy then fed my horse and cut off the water to keep my hidren from freezing in order to prevent it from freezing, we then eat our evening meal as my wife had it Served and placed on the table to Eat after we were through and the table cared far we then taken up our old Stand in front of a good fire and after taken a good warm the writer finished recording of our days labors and a Severe Spell of weather we then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest is the desire of the writer and his wife to night. Saturday February the 7th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a freezing morning wind Still from the north East freezing cold but clear and bright Thermometer at or near Seven oclock Registered at 14 Degrees tempature bleak and cold and a very heavey freeze wind Kept up from the north from ten oclock of the Six day of Fuary (February) 1914 up to about 4 - oclock this morning and then began to go down and then wind turned too the north East earley this morning and blew from that direction. but not So Strong as it blew yestarday but moved up cool enough onley liked a couple of degrees of being freezing alday long and if no change in the weather there will be a big freeze to night for it is fully cold enough at night fall to night The familey a rose very late this morning and when prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in the fireplace in our bedroom then returned too the house and assisted my wife in prepareing of our morning meal we prepared it in our bed room by the fireplace as it was too cold to cook on the Stove in our dining room after Serving the Same we Spread it in front of a good fire then portaken of the Same when through and the vessels and contents all put a way in good Shape we then enjoyed a good fire the greater part of the day as it were too cold to work but the cold did not check a great maney of the farmers from coming in too Crawford to by Supplyes for there famileys and them selves being Saturday and the writer made Several tripps down in town on buisiness that had to be attended too but Stayed by a good fire the greater part of the day we have eat our regular meals to day and Supplyed the fire place with plenty of wood to burn to Keep us warm to night and in the morning and have done up our nights Schores and nothing to do onley to enjoy the warmth of a good fire and now as it is a bout bed time we will retire too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the old people at home in the town of Crawford W.E.Costley at home in the Town of Crawford Texas

Sunday February the 8th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cold freezing morning wind from the South cloudey and damp Thermometer at or near half past Seven oclock this morning Registered at 20 Degrees tempature plenty of ice The familey arose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in the fire place in our bed then fed my horse when through in the lot i then returned to our Kitchen renewed the fire in our cook Stove and went to work and assisted my wife in prepareing of our morning meal and when Served and placed in front of a good warm fire in our bed room we then eat the Same and when through and the vessels all put a way in good Shape we then remained by a good warm fire as it were very cold and freezing as the tempature were quite low and a probability of going lower than what it is I wrote a letter to C C Costley this evening he lives in Waco and mailed it this evening on the fore oclock evening train and when i returned from this office i then went to work and prepared wood for night and morning and brought it in doors after getting through i attended too my horse by watering and feeding of him after getting through we then enjoyed the heel of a good fire as it was quite cool not onley cool but really cold. as we Eat our meals for to day. after resting for a bit i then fed my horse and that was the last that was to be done we then taken a good long Spell warming our Selves by the fire before going too our bed of repose and when readey we departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the old folks at home WE Costley at home in Crawford

Monday February the 9th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey damp morning wind blowing from the South east much in appearance of rain Thermometer at or near Seven oclock this morning Registered at 40 Degrees tempature The familey arose Some what late as usual this morning as old people are likely to do but after arising from our bed of Slumber and getting prepared for work the writer went to work and built on a fire in our Sleeping room in the fireplace then fed his horse after getting through i returned to our cook room and renewed the fire in our cook Stove then went to work to assist my wife to prepare our morning meal after getting of it Served and placed on the (table) we then portaken of our morning meal and when through my wife went to work and put the breakfast table and contents all in good Shape again, whilst the writer prepared for to gardening to day i caught and geered my horse hitched him too my plow then drove up to Mr R Q Kings and broke up his garden for him then Broke up Mr Curbows garden for him but eat my noon meal and fed my horse at noon to day finishing both gardens by five oclock PM of to day turned out after getting home gave my horse water taken the geers off of him then cleaned out his feet and Staked him out on the Street i then prepared fire place wood for our bed room and cook Stove and brought it in doors, when through i brought my horse up and gave him water then put him in the lot and fed him i then returned too the house and washed and dried my face and hands we then eat our evening meal as my wife had it Served and placed on the table readey to be eat after we were through and the table and contents cared far we moved in too our bedroom for a Short rest, and after resting for a bit i then recorded the days work done by my wife and my Self and when through the writer taken a Smoke and when through we departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night, is the desire of the old people W.E.Costley at home in the town of Crawford Texas

Tuesday February the 10th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey morning wind from the North Thermometer at or near Seven oclock this morning Registered at 44 Degrees tempature The familey arose Some what late this morning and after being prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in the fire place in our bedroom and when through with that part of the work i returned too my horse lot then fed my horse and when through with him i returned too our Kitchen and prepare a fire in our cook Stove then went to work and assisted my wife in prepareing our morning meal and after getting of it Served then placed on the (table) we then eat a portion of the Same and when through and the breakfast table and contents cared far then my wife Seated her Self in front of a good fire for a warm as it was Some what cool whilst the writer caugh then watered his horse put the geer on him hitched him too my cart then drove over too the breaks of Bosque for a load of wood after arriving at the place i dismounted from my cart taken the geer off ov (of) my horse and hopled him out to graze the writer then went to work to chopping of wood for my fire place and my Stove after choping for about one hour i then taken a cupple of buchets that i (took) with me and walked over too Mr Mulicans for Some milk and butter and when i arrived at the place they were eating of there dinner, So i joined in with them and eat my noon meal and when through we all then taken a Short rest then So Soon as the woman could fix my milk i then returned too my work on the South Side of middle Bosque and went to work and finished chopping of my load of wood then loaded it on my cat (cart) after geering of my horse and hitching of him too the cart then drove for Crawford Texas, after arriving at home i tak my horse from my cart taken the geer off of him gave him water and let him run in my yard to graze on the grass untill feeding time i then went too unloading my cart after getting of it unloaded i then walked down too the post office for my mail after getting of it i then returned home then fed my horse then returned too the house and eat my evening meal as my wife had it Served and placed on the table and announced the Same readey to be eat we Seated our Selve too the table then portaken of our evening meal after we were through and the table and contents cared far we then moved in too our bed room by a good fire for a Short rest and during of the time the writer recorded the work done by his wife and him Self to day then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good night rest to night is the desire of the old folks to night W.E.Costley at home in the Town of Crawford State of texas

W.Ednesday February the 11th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a morning wind from the South cold Thermometer at or near Seven oclock this morning Registered at 30 Degrees tempature The familey a rose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work the writer as usual renewed the fire in the bedroom fire place i then fed my horse and when through returned too the Kitchen and renewed the fire in the cook Stove then went to work and prepared our morning meal and when Served and placed on the table we Seated our Selves to the table and portaken of our morning meal and after eating of our morning meal and the breakfast table and contents cared far i then went too the post office for my mail and received a couple of letter one from Louese Leng of Joshua and one from Ed Costley of Waco Texas i then returned from the post office watered and fed my horse again after getting through eating i turned him or rather Staked him out on the Streets of Crawford of Texas then proceeded too the wash tub to wash my clothes and after finishing i then went to work at Something else like prepareing of my noon meal and after getting of it Served and placed on the table i Seated my Self too the then portaken of my noon meal all a lone and after getting through and the dinner table and contents cared far i then began to answer a letter that i received from Ed Costley of Waco this morning but i Stoped off writing of my letter then brought up my horse that i had Staked out on the Streets put the geer on him gave him water i then hitched him too my plow and went to braking on my garden and plowed up too the Sun going down i then turned out gave my horse water taken the geer off of him and then gave him his fed i then went to work and prepared night wood for the fireplace in our bed room also for the cook Stove then brought it in doors as it looked So much like rain late this Evening after getting throug we then eat our evening meal, that my wife had prepared for we too old people after we were throug and the table and contents of the Same we then moved in too our bedroom for a Short rest and during the time that i was taken a rest the writer record the labor done on the premises by my wife and the writer to day and a discription of the weather as it has been dark and cloudey all day and much in apearance of rain all day long but so far it has fail to Show up and the wind has been very damp and cool Now as we are about through with our days work we will go too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer and his wife to night W.E.Costley

Thursday February the 12th AD 1914 Opened up quite a damp cloudey wet morning as it began to rain at or near three oclock this morning with considerable thunder South East from crawford the rain was tolerably light but did a great deal of good first and last it rather moistened up the ground that the big December raines run to geather The familey arose from there bed of repose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work this morning the writer renewed the fire in our bedroom fire place then Started the fire in the cook Stove in our cook room i then went to work and on too cook my morning meal then fed my horse when through i returned too the cook room and finished up i placed it on the breakfast table and announced readey to be eat then my wife and the writer Seated our Selves too the breakfast table and portaken of our morning meal after getting through with our morning meal the writer went to work then put the breakfast table and contents all in good Shape again whilst my wife returned too her bed room by a good fire and the writer Staked his horse out on the Streets of crawford to graze then walked down too the Edwards and co Drug Store to See if they had aney Jad Salts for kidney trouble but had non but promised to Send forth with after Some i then walked up too the postoffice for my mail and received a letter from my grandaughter of Joshua Texas Edna Kelley also a Fort Worth dailey paper then returned and Seated my Self at my writing table and recorded the above on page No 125 Now the wind is from the South East this morning Earley and at or near half past Seven oclock the Thermometer registered at 54 Degrees tempature and at or near too oclock we eat our noon meal prepared by my wife M.V. Costley (Mary Virginia) and when through with our noon meal my wife went to work and put her dinner table and contents all in good Shape we taken a rest untill the writer could take a Smoke then my (wife) went to work Sewing and making of her a garment and the writer went to work at the wood pile in my horse lot chopping up fire wood for my fire place in our bed room and cook Stove and about the wind up at or near five oclock there blew up a rain from the North i then brought up my horse and fed him a bout that time there come up a Shower of rain from the direction Spoken of a bove So that closed up the out Side work for to day and began to turn very cold from the north and not fit weather to be out in exposing ones Self with cold so all Stayed in doors by a good fire untill we could do better and the better part we were glad to get to bed to keep warm for it turned cold quite fast So we departed too our bed bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer and wife to nigh at this hour being half past Seven oclock to night it began to turn real cold as the wind was very high from the north W. E. Costley at home at Crawford Texas

Friday February the 13th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cold freezing morning wind from the North blowing quite freezing Thermometer at or near half past Seven oclock this morning Registered at 20 Degrees tempature The familey arose from there bed of repose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in our bed room in the fire place but it was so cold and disagreeable it was Some length of time before the writer renewed the fire in the cook Stove i first fed my horse and after the Sun got up Some distance i then Started the fire in the cook Stove i then went to work and prepared the morning meal and when Served and spred in front of our fire place in our bed room we Seated our Selves round it then eat the Same as it were too cool to eat in our dining room after we were through the writer went to work and put evry thing in good Shape again then remained by the fire as it was too cool to be out in the cold as it was freezing at ten oclock to day and kept it up as it was very disagreeable wind flowing from the north The writer at or near too oclock this evening walked down too the beef market and purchased Some beef and pork in order to have a Square meal one time and when cooked we Shurley had it and after getting through the pleasure of eating a portion of the Same and the vessels used in eating of the Same and all put a way in good Shape a gain we then continuied our rest Spell as it was too cool to be out in the weather untill time to do up my night Schors and that time come around the writer ventured out and done up my night Schores and when through returned too my fire Side again as it was Still cold and as night came on it continued to grow colder although in the latter part of the day the clouds principly blewed a way and the Sun come out brigh and cold and the wind Some what Settled down and become Some what milder fixing for a Still freeze to night So when our regular time come a round to go to our bed of repose we then went hoping to get a good nights rest to nigh is the desire of my wife and the writer to night Mrs Lottie Meadows departed this life on Thursday morning a Daughter of S.D. (or S.P.)Clary a resident of Crawford being February the 12th and was berried in the Crawford Cemetery on the Evening of February the 13th 1914

Saturday February the 14th Ad 1914 - Opened up quite a freezing morning wind cold from the North East cold Thermometer at or near Seven oclock registered at 26 Degrees tempature the familey arose Some what late this morning and when prepared for buisiness the writer renewed the fire in our bedroom in the fire place then taken a warm for Some bit then fed my horse after getting through i returned too our kitchen and renewed the fire in the cook Stove and went to work then prepared the morning meal and when Served and placed in front of a good warm fire in our bed room we Seated our Selves a round the Same then portaken of our morning meal and when we were through the writer went to work and put away the vessels and content all in good Shape again we then placed our Selves in front of a good fire then enjoyed the warmth of the Same as it were real cold and done not any thing up to one oclock in the evening but keep up the fire but at that time the writer went to work and prepared our noon meal and about that time Laura Costley come in to See us but would not take dinner with the old people as she had been to dinner So the old folks too in number Seated our Selves too the table then eat our noon meal and when through the writer taken care of the dining table and contents and put evry thing in good Shap in the dining room we then enjoyed the heat of the fire as we had been doing alday up to at or near half past three oclock PM of today from which time the writer walked down too the post office to mail a couple of letters one too my son in Waco Texas the other one was too my grandaughter in Joshua in Johnson Co. Texas Louese Leng after mailing of the letter i taken a walk a round in the buisiness houses in the town to See how they were getting a long i found them all buisey Selling out there goods wares and merchandise and whilst at John B. Nichols Store he gave me 2 apples and too oranges for my wife and my Self to Eat when i arrived at home and after arriving at Mr Bob Bennit and Tallbet Store i purchased Some pecan from the firm then Stoped in at Mr Edwards Store and paid him for a bottle of Jad Salts that i purchased a day or So ago 75 cts is what it cost to be taken for Kidney and bladder trouble one table spoon full in a glass of water before breakfast of a morning after returning home i then went to work to doing up my night work and after getting through i then went to work and then recorded the above, of the work done on the premises to day also the condition of the weather, after getting through recording of the above we then eat a Snack of food for our evening meal then taken a Short rest to night is the desire of the writer and wife W.E.Costley at home

Sunday February the 15th AD 1914 - Opened Some what a clear morning but Some what Smokey wind from the but freezing cold Thermometer at or near 7-oclock registered at 28 Degrees tempature the familey arose Some what late this morning but after getting prepared for work the writer as usual Started the fire in the fireplace in our bedroom then fed my horse after getting through i returned too our Kitchen and Started a fire in the cook Stove then went to work and prepared our morning meal after getting of it Served and placed on the table we portaken of our morning meal after we were through the writer taken care of the vessels and contents of the Same we then taken our Seets in front of a good fire in our bed room as it was quite cool as it was Still freezing and whilst taken a good warm taken a Spell a reading of the news all over the State as printed by the Waco Tribune of February the 14 1914 of the troubles trials and distress all over the United Stated both finasual and personal affare up to about one oclock from which the writer renewed the fire in the cook Stove then my wife went to work and prepared our noon meal after getting of it Served and placed on the dinner table we Seated our Selves too the Same then portaken of our noon meal and when through and the table and contents cared for we returned too our bed room for a nother rest after resting i taken a walk down too old man Schoffners to See how his wife was getting along as the old Lady has been Sick very near all winter and appearantly the Same as She was the last time i Seen her I remained with them for Some one hour and a half and whilst there Mrs Roberts and her Daughter and the Ladies son William Meadors and children and William Gee come to See the old man Schoffner and wife Bill Gees wife was there when i went but whilst there She went to See Sam Clarys familey. I then returned home after returning home i then done up my nights work and after getting throug i then eat a cold Snack for our evening meal after getting through and the vessels put away in good Shape we then taken a nother rest then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good night rest to night is the desire of the writer and wife to night WECostley

Monday February the 16th day 1914 - Opened up quite a cool morning but not freezing wind from the South west Thermometer at or near Seven oclock this morning registered at 36 Degrees tempature the familey arose some what late this morning but after being prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in the fire place in our bedroom then fed my horse after getting through, i then returned too the house and renewed the fire in the cook Stove in our Kitchen then went to work and prepared the morning meal after getting of it Served and placed on the table and announcing the Same readey to be eat we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our morning meal when through and the breakfast table and contents cared far the writer then caught and geered my horse hitch him too my plow then drove too the North East Side of Crawford and broke up DR Compton garden for him when through i drove home taken my teem from my plow taken the geer off of him gave him water then put him in his stable then fed him i then returned to the house and made preperation to prepare our noon meal i Started the fire in the cook Stove then as Annie Stirling had come to see the old folks to day She went to work with the help of my wife and prepared our noon meal and when Served and placed on the table then announced readey to be eat we Seated our Selves too the dinner table then portaken of our noon meal and when through Annie Stirling went to work and put the dinner table all in good shape again whilst the writer caught and geered his horse then hitched him too my cart then put my plow in the cart then drove over too old man Cranfill and left my plow as i was going over too the bosque after a load of wood as i intend to plow the old mans garden to morrow if i am able to work and my horse able to pull after getting too the brakes of middle Bosque i tied my horse too a tree then went to work to cutting a load of wood when cut i loaded it on the cart then drove too my place in the Town of Crawford Texas Stopping at old Uncle Charley Cranfill to See how they were getting a long they reported that they were Some better they thaugh and the old man was trying to eat a few bites but complained of having no appetite to eat any thing what ever after remaining for Some little bit with them, then drove on too my place in the town of Crawford after arriving at hime i taken my horse from the cart taken the geer off of him then Staked him out on the Street of Crawford untill i could unload my cart and prepare wood for night and morning for the fire place in our bed room and cook Stove and bring it in doors when through i then brought my horse too his Stable then watered and fed him when through i returned in doors and eat my evening meal all a lone as my wife prepared it but did not eat any as She was not feeling very well after i were through with my evening meal i put a way the vessels that i used all in good Shape then went too my bed room Seated my Self down at my writing table and finished recording of the work done by the old people and when then through i finished a letter that i had Started to write too Edna Kelley my Grandaughter of Joshua Texas we then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a quiet nights rest to night is the wish and will of the old people to night W E Costley Crawford Texas

Tuesday February the 17th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey morning wind from the South blowed quite hard alday and Still keeping it up to night much in appearance of a great change in the weather Thermometer at or near Seven oclock Registered at 42 Degrees tempature The familey arose Some what earlier than we have been in the habit of doing and after getting prepared for work the writer Started the fire in the fire place in our bed room then fed my horse and when through i returned to the Kitchen and renewed the fire in our cook Stove then went to work and prepared our morning meal and when Served then placed on the table and announced readey to be eat we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our morning meal when we were through and the breakfast table and contents cared far the writer caught then curried his horse put the geer on him hitch him too my cart then drove over too old man Cranfills at old Crawford to plow his garden and after arriving at the place i then dismounted from my cart taken my horse from my cart and riged him up to plow whilst murry Seymore, fixed up there horse to match mine to plow to day in the old mans garden. after getting of the teem riged up and hitched too my plow we began to lay off and plant his rosten ear patch of 36 roes and layed off and covered up too 12-Oclock noon to day then turned out and watered and fed the teem and eat our noon meal, after we were through we taken a rest for Some little bit we then hitched up and went to plowing a gain and finished planting corn at or near half past too oclock P.M. of to day and braking out the middles of the corn, we then went to work to finish braking of his garden when through we put the horse too my cart then drove for my place in the town of Crawford Texas we did not finish the whole of braking of his garden but could have finished plowing of his garden but Murry Seymore had to go to Crawford therefore we turned out in time for him to make the trip too Crawford and back after i arrived at home i dismounted from my cart taken the horse from the cart taken the geer off of him cleaned the dirt from out of his feet then gave him water to drink after he had drank i gave him his corn and oats, i then prepared wood for the fire place in our bed room also for the cook Stove then brought it all in doors to be kept dry as it resembled rain very much i then eat my evening meal that my wife had prepared for her and i and when through and the Evening table and contents cared far we then moved in too our bedroom for a rest as the writer was very tiard from my days work to day and after resting and taken of a Smoke, i went to work and recorded the labors done by the familey to day, and a discription of the weather as it come and past a way and as i am a bout through we will retire too our bed of repose hoping that each one of us old people my receive a refreshing nights rest to night is the desire of each one of us to night W.E.Costley at home in the Town of Crawford

Wednesday 18th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey damp morning as it began to Shower down rain Earley this morning and Still Showering occasionley at intervals at half past nine oclock to day Thermometer at or near 8 - Oclock this morning Registered at 62 Degrees tempature The familey arose Some what late this morning and when prepared far work the writer renewed the fire in the cook Stove then put on the coffee to make i then fed my horse and when through i returned too the Kitchen and went to work and prepared our morning meal and when Served and placed on the table then announced readey to be eat we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our morning meal. when through and the breakfast table and contents cared far i then renewed the fire in the fire place in our bedroom as it was quite damp but in no way cold but appeared to be damp and unfavorable. I then began to note down what had been done on the place up to ten oclock this morning and Still raining and from the appearance of the Elements this morning it Seems as though it had Set in for a bad Spell but in the latter part of the day the principle part of the clouds blew a way and become a tolerably fare day at last, well the writer and his wife Stayed very clost in doors to day as it was damp and wet to day not pleasant to be on the damp ground but the writer made too tripps down at the Store of John B Nichols and companey to get a few articles that was neaded and at or near too oclock we went to work and prepared our noon meal and after getting of it Served then placed on the table we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our noon meal, and after getting through and the table and contents cared far, we then Seated our Selves to the fire in bed room and Spent the evening in doors and during the time i were over halling my account at Nichols and companey to get it Straitened up as i am intending to have a Setlement with the firm, in a few days. and after leaving off from the work i was at i then prepared wood for the fireplace in our bed room then for the cook Stove in the cook roome then, brought it in doors to be handy, i then brought my horse up and watered and fed him and gave him a good currying as he was very muddy from wallowing in the mud to day after getting through returned too the house then Seated my Self down at my writing table then went to work to finish recording of our day work that has been done to day and when through we departed too our bed of repose hoping too get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the old people to night W E Costley at home in the town of Crawford Texas

Thursday February the 19th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey cold morning wind from the North east earley in the morning a great change in the weather Thermometer at 8 - Oclock this morning Registered at 44 Degrees tempature, as usual for old people arose Some what late but after getting in Shape for buisiness the writer renewed the fire in the fire place in our bed room then fed his horse after i were through feeding i then returned too the Kitchen and Started the fire in the cook Stove then went to work with the help of my wife then prepared our morning meal after getting of it Served and placed on the breakfast table we Seated our Selves too the Same then portaken of our morning meal when through and the breakfast table and contents cared for my wife remained by a good fire whilst the writer walked over too the South East portion of the town and got Some milk for my wife from Mrs Cosgroves as She had a plenty to Spare the healey(?needy?) after returning with the milk i then went to work to give an account of the labor done by my wife and the writer up to ten oclock to day as my wife was as buisey as the writer Straitning up the house, as the weather has become So unfavorable it will force the old people to Stay in doors as it is as the day passes away it appears as the weather becomes colder and more disagreeable from the appearance of the elements it look in appearance as though it might Sleet or Snow before it breaks off or become to be Settled weather at or near one oclock this Evening my wife and the writer went to work and prepared our noon meal, after getting of it Served and placed on the table we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our noon meal after getting through my wife went to work then put the dinner table and contents all in good Shape then moved in too our bed room for a rest. after resting for a bit i then went to work Straitning up and account between John B. Nichols and the writer after getting throug i then walked down too the post office and mailed a letter too James Tubbs at or near Stamford Texas i then walked over too old Crawford too old Crawford Texas to see the old man Cranfill as him and his wife as they were both Sick in bed and not able to help him Self, after remaining for Some bit withe the folks, i then returned home Stopping at Mr Tallbees to See how him and his wife was getting and i found him in the bed and her wanting to be if She had a chance as She felt feeble and very poorley. but Some one had to be up So She Said (?stayed?) after remaining for Some little bit i then come on home then prepared wood for the fire place in our bed room also for the cook Stove and brought it in doors to be handy the writer then watered and fed my horse and when through with that part of the work i returned in doors and we eat a cold Snack for our evening meal and when through and the vessels cared far that we used in eating our evening meal the writer then went to work and recorded the labor done on the premises to day by my Self and my wife and as i am about throug we will take a Short rest then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the old folks W.E.Costley at home in the Town of Crawford State of Texas

Friday February the 20th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cold disagreeable morning wind from the North East but mild in its action Thermometer at or near half past Seven oclock this morning registered at 36 Degrees tempature with a prospect a head to be a bright nice cool day. but it turned out to be dark gloomey cloudey day and quite cool alday long The familey arose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work the writer renewed the fire in the fireplace in our bed room then fed the horse and when through with the horse i then returned too the cook room and Stated of a fire in the cook Stove then went to work and assisted my wife in prepareing of our morning meal and after getting of it Served and placed on the breakfast table we Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our morning meal and after we were through and the breakfast table and contents cared far -the writer then caught and geered his poney hitched him too my cart then drove over too old man Cranfield to finish a piece of plowing that i had to do as i had plowed in his garden a whole day and liked about one hour work finishing and i drove over too his place and finished brak in his garden after getting through i put my horse to the cart then put my plow in too my cart i then drove up too ole man cranfills house the layed my plow and double trees out on the ground as i had too go too the brakes of Middle bosque for a load of wood after getting of it choped and loaded on too my cart i then drove back too old man Cranfills and loaded on too my cart my plow and double trees then drove too my place in the town of Crawford Texas after arriving at home i taken my horse from the cart gave him water taken the geer off of my horse then fed him i then returned too the house then portaken of my noon meal as it was late in the day being past too oclock P.M. which was late but under the circumstances i could do no better, after getting through and the dinner table and contents cared far the writer taken a Short rest and a Smoke when through i walked a cross the Street too my neighbor Mr Tallbee to See how he was getting along as he was in bed Sick after arriving at his bed Side i found him too be better than he was this morning when i was to See him after remaining with him for a bit i then returned too my wood pile and went to work to choping up wood for my fire place and cook Stove i brought it in doors as it resembled rain So much, when through i then brought up my horse then fed him So that finished the work out of doors, i then returned too my writing table and recorded the labor that done by the writer and his wife as She has been as buisey to day as i have been at the domestic work and as we are a bout through we will depart to our bed of repose hoping to get a quiet nights rest to night is the desire of the old people to night W.E.Costley at home in the Town of Crawford

Saturday February the 21st AD 1914 - Opened up quite a dark and gloomey much in appearance of rain Sleet or Snow wind from the South blowing damp and cool, Thermometer at or near Seven oclock this morning registered at 44 Degrees tempature. The familey arose Some what earley this morning and after getting prepared for work, the writer renewed the fire in the fire place in our bed room. i then fed my horse when through with him i then returned too our cook room and prepared the fire in our cook Stove then went to work to prepare our morning meal after getting of it Served and placed on the breakfast table we Seated our Selves to the table then portaken of our morning meal when through and the breakfast table and contents put in good Shape the writer caught and curried his horse then put the geer on him then hitched him too my plow then drove up to Mrs Armstrong garden then layed off and planted her garden in irish potatoes beet seed also radish seed and beded out the middles after getting through i then drove up to John Nichols garden and layed off and planted his irish potatoes onions then bedded up the remainder of the garden when through i fed and watered my horse then returned too the house and eat my dinner as my wife had Served it and placed it on the table then announced readey to be eat we then Seated our Selves too the table then eat our noon meal after we were through and the dinner table and contents cared far we then taken a Short rest then departed to my work again plowing in potatoes and other Seed for Frank Holder after getting through i then drove home then taken the geer off of my horse then gave him water then Staked him out. then taken a walk down in to Crawford to get a Soop bone after abtaining of the Same, i then returned by John B. Nichols store then bought Some dryed apples to go with my beef after arriving at home i went to work and put my meat on to cook and a few of my apples that i had just baught about that time Mrs Bob Bennit sent the old people a lot of fine butter and Some good light bread So we had a good meal for our evening meal after getting through and the evening table and contents cared far we then moved in too our bedroom for a Short rest and during of the time Mrs Gee come over from a crose the Street to Sit and talk a while and when Mr Gee come in from the lodge the familey all returned home, and then the writer went to work and finished recording of our days work, and after getting through we departed too our bed of repose hope to get a good nights rest to nigh is the desire of the old people WECostley at home in the Town of Crawford Texas

Sunday February the 22th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudy mist look morning wind from the South. Thermometer at or near Seven oclock this morning registered at 60 Degrees tempature The familey arose Some what late this morning and after getting prepared for work the writer made out to Start the fire in the fireplace in our bed room then in the cookstove then fed my horse with difficult work as i were about down Sick i was Sick on the last past night did not rest to do any good as i began to caugh about midnight and caughed up till till day brake this morning from which i arose from my bed and taken Some caugh medison i then received Some east from the medison my wife had to foot the bill in cooking this morning as the man was off of his heels this morning for the first time this winter i Shurley was quite poorley alday day with some like unto the gripp after my wife had prepared the morning meal and had placed it on the table we then Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our morning meal but the writer Eat quite Sparingley as he was not careing for any thing to eat i drank Some soop and drank a cup of coffee for my breakfast. also eat a Small bit of beef and consisted of the food i Eat through the day up till late in the evening from which i Eat a light Supper before the Sun passed away and when it came time to feed i brought up my horse gave him water then fed him we then taken our usual rest before going too our bed or repose whice was about half past 8 - oclock to night Dr A.M. Armstrong paid the old folks a visit to day and remained about too hours and his conversation was the leading part of the Scripture in the old and new testament W.E.Costley in the town of Crawford Texas

Monday February the 23dh AD 1914 - Opened up quite a Nice cool morning being the morning that the writer taken Sick- and has been Sick ever Since but not confine too my bed all the while but not able to do any thing towards buisiness or work and during of that time the weather has been quite changeable frist raining then cold and has kepted it up untill the 10th day of April and up too that day and date and Still driving a head with the Same Kind of weather as it is Still cool and cloudy to day being the 10th day of Aprill AD 1914 WE Costley-

Saturday April the 11th 1914 - Opened up quite a bright nice morning wind from the South thermometer at or near 10 - oclock AM registered at 70 Degrees tempature to day the writer at this time was Staying at my Sones E D Costleys at waco and after Eating of my breakfast i then taken a walk down to the Brasos River at the Suspentsion Bridges that Span the Brasos river and found them to be a powerful act of workman Ship and when through inspecting evry thing that spand the Brasos river i then returned too my Sons E.D.Costleys for a rest as i were quite feble from a long Spell of Sickness that i have just gone through with of about near Seven weeks and Still quite feble do not Strenghen very fast after making my return too my Sons we then Eat our noon meal and when through and resting for a bit i then walked up Stare too a room to take a nap So i could recroot up faster but after lying down i become woke up and could not go to Sleep So i lay on the bed for a bout too hours and taken a rest then arose from the bed i were resting on then walked down in too Waco and purchas a lot of medison for my wife and my Self then returned back too my Sons and taken a rest the balance of the evening and after eating of our evening meal we then taken a Short rest then taken a Short rest and departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest too night W.E.Costley at Waco Texas

Easter Sunday April the 12th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey damp morning much in appearance of rain wind from the north quite cool and as the day passes a way it turnes much cooler and the north wind much Stronger and turning cooler evry hour it is what might becalled a gloomey Easter day and the weather left behind it has destroyed the crop of the Spring of 1914. and Still driving a head it has been raining often and on all through the day with but little likeihoods of being any better Soon now we have eat our Easter noon meal and all the familey dined heartiley and enjoyed our noon meals as it was prepared carfully and prepare in good Shape by Ida Costley the wife of Ed Costley of Waco as my wife and my self are with them at this time on account of sickness and Still the good works goes on with Mrs Ida Costley manager controlling the whold affare too her Self whilst the others of the members of the familey eat there regular meals and went there way now the principal part of the night of Easter night April the 12th AD 1914 rained a Slow rain W.E.Costley Waco Texas

Monday April the 13th 1914 - Opened up a damp wet morning wind from the North East The familey arose Some what late this morning by after breakfast was Serve and placed on the table and announced readey to be eat the familey all Seated our Selves too the morning table then Eat our morning meal then departed too there regular work all but my wife and the writer we did not work neither one of the old forks (folks) went to work as neither one of was able too work there fore we remained in doors being a nice warm day but was Some what cloudey it would Shut up the Sun at times it kept it hid frequentley and kept it Shut up a great deal of the day but for all that the ground dry off very fast the most of the clouds was north ward the most - indicating fowl weather in the North part of Texas and other whares in the State of Texas and ended the day like wise. Tuesday April 14th 1914 - Opened up Some what cool Still damp but when the Sun come out it Soon dried off and become bright again and become a nice day W.E.Costley Wednesday April the 15th 1914 - Open 15th 1914 Opened up quite a nice Still day and was quite Still the night of the 14th of April 1914 as the morning of the 15th of April at or near one oclock in the morning there was a heavey fire broke out in the North East part of Waco doing a great deal of damage burning down one residence and a gin and burning up near a hundred bales of cotton for one man the loss was great.the day opened up nice and bright and become very warm through the day wind what was Stiring was from the South and remained bright and clear all through the day W E Costley at Waco Texas

Thursday Apris (April) the 16th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a nice clear morning wind from the East in the Earley part of the day but after 12 - oclock noon of the Same day the wind a rose from the East much Stronger and blowed at a rate of a bout 21 miles per hour and at or near five oclock in the evening it began to cloud up in the Evening and Soon Shut out the rays of the Sun the clouds Sprung rather from the west but the East wind continued to hold its own in Strength and vigor. the prospect this evening is far for rain. but up to nine oclock bed time it had failed to rain well the order of the day to day in Waco is a big Show today and to night a dance at the cotton Palace So that ended the days work in the city or waco texas W.E.Costley in the City of Waco Texas

Friday April 17th AD 1914 "Opened up Some what a cloudey damp morning wind from the South East blowing damp and cool the Stir in the City of waco Waco this morning by the labiors of the place appears to be great evry boddy in the city appears to be up and doing in a laboring movement for Sustainance of life and liberty it Seems that the times in Waco is always flush as there are So maney people the writer has been sick ever since the 23rd day of February but at this writing is improving some little able to go a round some little at times. Now it is half past too oclock PM in the after noon and looks very much like rain once and a while a few drops falls too the Earth wind Still Strong from the South East. Now at this writing the travel has increased a great deal to what it were in the fore noon of today but Still gloomey weather with a great prospects of rain and at or near three oclock in the after noon of to day it began a Slow mist of rain from the South very cloudey and beginning to be very wet and disagreeable as i have no thermometer and have to depend on others and those that i refered too after 12-Oclock noon to day registered at 78 Degrees tempature with great prospect of heaver rains to night but the wind has calmed down and become very warm and at or near five oclock in the after noon of to day it become quite cloudey and began to mist rain from the South and bid fare to come and Electric Sam (storm) W.E.Costley in the city of Waco Texas

Saturday April the 18th AD 1914 Opened up quite a cool damp morning as there blew up and Electric Starm from the West and changed too the North with heavey lightning and thunder with a nice rain just after midnight of this morning wind this morning is from the North with a good prospect of colder weather as it was Extreemly warm in the fore part of the night last night but when the Electric Starm blew up the weather Soon become cooler and more comfortable also at nine oclock this morning there were a heavey cloud Still lay in the north and north west Signifyin cooler weather to come write a way but as it turned the clouds blew away and become warmer and was quite clear and bright. now this has been a buisey Stiring day in waco as there has been hundreds and thousand of people that has viseted waco on buisines and trade parts of the town almost impassible for the immence crowd of people and when nightfall come on it continued the Same so after eating our evening meal at my son at the jail as he is the keeper of the McLennan county Jail we then taken a good rest and departed too our bed of repose with the hopes of having a quiet nights rest to nights W.E.Costley at my Sons home in the town of Waco, the Thermometer run up to 74 Degrees tempature in waco today

Sunday April the 19th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey cool morning wind from the north but not really cold cannot Say how hight the wind will get but the weather prophets say that the wind to day will travel at or near 14teen mile per hour.in the after noon of to day. Tuesday April 21 1914 opened up Some what a cloudey day cool morning wind from the South East blowing Some what Strong and brisk and has the appearance of rain from the appearance of the Elements all the familey were able to eat there morning meal heartly and after the morning was over with the writer taken a stroll down too the main streets of Waco to see how buisiness was been carried on and after arriving at spot i found evry boddy in a stir and buisiness flush i then spent several hours wondering about taken in the sights and senry as the passed along upto 12 - Oclock to day from which i returned back too my sons at the jail as he was jail keeper we then eat our noon meal and when through and we had taken a rest as there was to be a parrade with the fire station now with there teems and water works and a general parade of school children and others i walked down to the fire station to see them move out and when readey and made the Start they made a mise (nice) display of there Perrade and after the(y) left the center part of the Town of the city of Waco then contanted to view the Town in part untill late in the evening then left for my Sons after arriving at his home then Eating of our evening meal i we then taken of our evening rest then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to nigh is the wish and will of the familey to night McLennan County texas WE Costley at Waco Texas

April the 22th 1913 (1914) opened up quite a damp morning as it had began to rain from the South East at or near one oclock the last past night and continued too rain all the day following and Still continued to rain the next night So the day passed away with but a Small Stir in the City of waco and but a light buisiness done to day the amount of work done was with the Street cars carrying the citizens too and frow from there homes to town and back too there places of a bode being a very wet disagreeable day all the way through and as too the writer did not get to See out little and remain at home at my Sons and wrote Several letters too my children and firends abroad. and after the familey had enjoyed three good meals vituals during the day prepared by my Sons wife Mrs. Ida Costley wwe then taken a good long rest then departed too our bed of repose hoping to receive a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer and familey to night W.E.Costley at my Sons in the Town of Waco Texas

Thursday April the 32 (23)dh AD 1914 - Opened up quite damp and cool very wet as it has been raining often and on for the last 36 hours making the Earth very full of water putting a good Season in the ground a great healp on growing Cropps and to aid the grass to grow which will be a great advantage too the Stock of all kind, and replenishing the water coarses through out the land and country where the rains visetls: now at this writing it is nearing on to 12-oclock noon to day and a damp wind blowing from the South and the Sun has not Showed it Self to day and from the looks of the Elements at this writing not likely too . Shortley not after eating our three of vituals to day we contented our Selves by taken a good rest Dr Johnson of Waco began to doctor a canser on my wifes face at 4 oclock this after noon being April the 23dh 1914 now after taking our rest as usual we departed too our bed of repose hoping too get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the familey WE Costley at home at my Son E D Costley

 

Friday April the 24th AD 1914 Opened up quite a cloudey damp morning wind from the South blowing fresh and cool much in appearance of rain but did not rain at waco on to day but in the latter part of the day it began to clear off and the Sun came and shined brightley with a few clouds left behind to leave and appearance that it has been fowl weather all a long the line for Several days past i learned from a Poleaseman (police man) too day that the home gard had been ordered out to day to go to San Antonio to prepare for war in mexico and that they would leave to day for that place from Waco WE Costley at my Sons in Waco Texas

Saturday April the 25th 1914 - Opened up cloudey and damp and a light rain fell on last night which makes it disagreeable this morning wind from the South blowing mildley but after the turn of the day it become quite warm and cloudey but the Streets become dy (dry) and pleasan to walk on but from the weather i am in cline to beleave that we will have more rain in a Short while as it is So very warm now as the day had Ended very cloudey and warm and we have had our three good meals vituals to day we take our usual rest then depart too our bed of repose hoping that all will get a good night rest to night is the desire of the familey W.E.Costley at Ed Costleys in Waco Texas

Sunday April the 26th 1914 Opened up quite a glommey morning much in appearance of falling weather wind from the South blowing nice and cool but quite gloomey the weather and atmosphere gives gorg conclusions for more rain Shortley evry thing in a Stir this morning as though the Sabbath day was not in Existance. but thrug ( though?) for the sake of money the Sabbath is observed at a great extent in the Town of Waco Texas, but i see directly that a wheel can not be turn if there is not money Enough in it to greese the Spindels before starting So See there is no chance for the Spindle to turn just now. at or near 12- Oclock to day it began to rain from the South and rained a hard Shower from that direction with considerable thunder from that direction and Still keeps it at intervals now Since it began to rain at the time mentioned above it has Kept it up a good part of latter part of the evening and Shurley it has rained a good Season for one term (?) and time but Still holds out well it first Sprang from the north but later on it become changeable from most any direction you might call far now there has been Several hard Showers of rain this Sabbath Evening and the day passes away dark and cloudey as though the rain was not through with the writer is not feeling well to day on account of the rain and the dampness of the weather So by the by its has been a very damp day all along the line W.E.Costley at Waco at my Sons ED Costley

Monday April the 27th AD 1914-Opened up quite a gloomey morning Thunderdring and lightning and a down poor of rain hard in to a gentle mist a long at intervals and become lighter the Brasos getting up sharpley making things in appearance quite gloomey on acount of hight water and from the llos of the Elements in the forenoon it Seemed as though it would rain a week but not cleared off yet but for all the rain that fell it did not check travail what ever all the same they drove through the Storm as though nothing had happened more than usual in the city nothing more than the bigg rise in the Bosque and Brasos river. and a Siclone in Cory Ell (Coryell) county Texas killing too persons and woonding too persons to amount of a bout ten thousand Dollars and the day wound up with out any more rain or disastors that was heard of we then eat our evening meal and taken our usual rest then departed too our bed of repose hoping the familey may enjoy a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer too night W.E.Costley at my Sons in the city of waco Texas

Wednesday April the 29th 1913- AD 1914-Opened up quite a foggy morning and after passing away it become very cloudey wind from the South much in appearance of more rain before clearing away Every thing is moving a long glibley in Waco to day bids far for a good deal with the merchants to day in the city as there are a great maney persons coming in to town to day My wife appears to be getting a long alright this morning she rested quite well on the last past night and appears to be resting well so far up in the day and eats hearty enough and set up a good bit being treated for a can (cancer) of her face and as to the writer i suppose i am doing well enough to be as old as i am i too had a good nights sleep but my appetite is not so good as i would wish it to be but can make out on it well enough i taken a good walk down in town today to get my wife a pare of scissors small ones and after retaining of them i went after i then returned back too my sons Ed Costleys at the jail then assted (assisted) the woman of the house a bout some word (work) that was needed doing and when through i went to work and here with gave a Statement of what i have been doing to day all along the line the calcarious clouds in the air are begin to thicken up and the Skyes look dark blue indicating more rain in a Short bit to come and yet the good work goes on as though nothing had happened Such a thing as high waters and cyclones and distruction of life and property now just at this writing it is too oclock in the after noon and very warm and Sweltry and the clouds Still floating in the air as they were in the forenoon of today but no rain to day and the day remained the Same with out any varation through out the day and the familey eat there evening meal as usual the taken a Short rest annd departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the familey at home in Waco at my Sons E.D. Wind from the South and Still cloudey with Still a prospect of more rain wind from the South. all the familey were able to eat our morning meal and when all were all through every one of the familey went to work at there vocation of labor and worked the day through and eat three heartey meals to day and at or near three oclock PM it become thick cloudey and be gan to rain Slowley from the South, and Still continued to rain up too a bout 4 oclock PM to night and was favorably of keeping of it up as there appears to be no check to it at this writing W.E.Costley at Ed Costley in Waco Texas

Friday May 1st AD 1914 - Opened up quite a damp cloudey morning with great appearance of more rain wind from the South and very cloudey damp and cool we are all well tolerable well this morning able to eat our allowance my wifes cancer appears to be getting a long alright doing very well at present that has been taken out by Doctor Johnson of Waco Texas now evry thing is driving a long nicely in the city of Waco trade and labor good enough health from all account is quite good for the amout of papulation in Waco and the rains has been quite numerous during this Spring but does no seem to be as maney people in Waco to day as has been in attendance here too fore Since i have been in the town, some five or six weeks my health in some respects are much better it appears to me gaining strength evry day and it is to behoped that it will Keep it up and i will become sound and will again at any rate it would oblige me greatley to the end. It is now twelve oclock noon today and i will have to leave of writing untill i can eat my noon meal vituals i then can be able to give Some more account of the weather and precdeings of the weather and times of the day now in taking a view over the city of Waco from the jail residence it is a perfect mass of humas ( human) people of all discription mexicans americans negrows Japaness bohemons jews and evry other denomination that walks the Earth as well as ever rowls (rolls) or turns on wheels from a bycicle up ut to irter (unto inter) urban cars and as thick as hale but yet not much damage done what ever to be so maney of them in operation now and then one gets tilled over and some one become badley heart but not often to be Such a stir in a city of Waco with forty or fifty thousand people in the city to roam the streets dailey as there trade demands each and evryday of the week round. now it is Something near five oclock in the afternoon and no change in the weather Still cloudey and damp and much in the apearance of rain now the writer taken a trip down in too the buisiness part of the town on Austin Street to take my son a letter that had come to the jail Box for C.C. Costley and the writer taken the letter to him i being his parents and every street was croweded with automobells carages wagons also the bycicles dray wagons carts and street wagons or cars traveling as thick as hail after delivering of the letter i then went and baught some pulverised shugar for my son and braught to him to sprinkle over his candy to keep from sticking after returning i then remained at his candy stand untill he could take a rest as he had been sitting all day and was some what worn out after he had rested up for a bit he then taken his place and i the writer returned too the jail or the jailers quarters for to take a rest as i were some what tiard and worried from my walk down in too the town now the day ended cloudey and gloomey and after eating our evening meal we taken a good long rest then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a pleasant nights rest to night i furgot to mention a disaster that happened too the railroads in East Waco at about Six oclock this evening from some cause the gasolene and carosene oil tank caught fire and burned up in spite of all the fire works (trucks?) in Waco and being a maney one of them present. May the 2th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey damp cool morning wind from the South damp and cool much in appearance of rain and much more So like being a norther as it is So dark and gloomey in the north evry thing appears to be on a boom in waco Today buisiness appears to very flush and evry person up and a going in buisiness like manner now this has turned out to be a raney day as it has been raining purty much all evening with heavey thunder and lightning and Still looks gloomey and did rain late in the Evening a nice rain but when the Sun just before Sitting had the appearance of Sitting clear but went down behind a dark cloud and the elements Still remain with a thick coat of cloud alnight long, So when the time come to retire too our bed of repose we did So hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the familey W.E.Costley at home in the town of Waco Texas at my Sons Ed Costley

Sunday May the 3rd AD 1914- Opened up dark and gloomey very cloudey misting of rain occasionley the Sun has Shown it Self but little to day on account of the thick foliage of clouds and kept on up to about ten oclock AM of today from which a heavey rain came up from the South raining for about one hour very hard flooding the Streets with very heavey lightning and thunder from nearley evry direction Starting the over flowed Streems again, and putting them in good Shape to rais fish again as it has been dry So long that the principal part of the fish is all Streems has about gave way So maney persons fishing after the finey tribe, but these rains will help to increase them again a new and fresh to begin on again, now in the after noon of to day there were a very heavey (cloud) passed from South to East down a bout marlin and the tower part of McLennan county Texas this Side of Falls county Texas the border county to McLennan County Texas and then when the Streets dried off Some what they resumed buisiness again, in the Automabell W.E.Costley at waco at my Son Ed Costley

Now the rainey weather let up about Monday night at 12 oclock at night and Tuesday morning blowed off and become bright and clear with the Sun Shining bright and clear for the first time in a great while past then it was that the ground began to dry off to give the farmers chance to till the Soil very much this Spring on the account of So much wet weather. but from the appearance of the Elements to day i am in clined to beleave that Spring had opened and work will begin alright again i hope So at least to give the farmer a Showing May the 5th 1914 W.E.Costley at his Sons Ed Costleys (J was marked out. Wednesday May the 6th AD 1914- Opened up quite and unexpect my morning as it were clear and bright for the first Series for at least 3 months or more and it is a proving to be a great blessing to evry thing even to the work hands of the corn and cotton fields but as the day passed away it become wonderful warm and by the time night come on it was So very warm one could not rest for the heat very oppressive all through the night but Still remained clear and bright. Thursday May the 7th AD 1914- Opened up quite a cloudey morning wind from the South much in the appearance of falling weather and remained in that condition up too about 12- oclock noon to day from which there blew up a thunder Storm from the west a very dark cloud and another fine rain lasting Some one hour or more and was very warm gust before coming up but after it made its appearance the weather become cool and nice for Some bit but when the clouds passed a way it become quite warm a gain also bright and clear as though nothing had happened and remained So the balance of the day but after night fall it began to cloud up again and be gan to thunder in the west as though it was raining very hard but did not reach waco Texas now as we have eat our three meals of vituals to day al So taken our usual rest after our last meal eater we will go too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights to night is the desire of the writer - W.E.Costley waco

Friday May the 8th 1914 - opened up quite a nice morning Some what cool wind from the north and clear and bright alday after the writer eat his breakfast i then aided C.C.Costley in his candy business which taken me a bout alday untill late in the evening and ended the day very much wearried big stir in Town today trade in waco to day was quite brisk evry thing in the weather kind was delightful as the Sky was black and blue and the Sun Shown out delightful. Now as the day has passed away and the Evening Shede had made it appearance we will eat our least meal for to day and take our usual rest then depart too our bed of repose hoping to get a good night rest to night is the desire of the writer to night W.E.Costley at home or at least at my Sons in the Town of Crawford Texas Ed Costleys

Sunday May the 10th AD 1914 - Opened up a beautiful morning wind brisk from the South now on the last past night at or near nine oclock AM a man in Jail cut his throat in the jail room and come very near ding from the loss of blood but is Still living at 3-oclock this Sabbath Evening (see newspaper article in this file.) now this has been a lovley day to behold as it has been the greater part of the day bright and clear and a lovely day up to about Six oclock this evenin and Still lovely at or near too oclock this lovly Sabbath evenin Mr Deen Costley and my self taken a ride in a Inturban car out across the Brazos river through East Waco on out to Oak hill to see a new town that they are laying off to connect to East Waco and after viewing the grounds and remaining for some little bit we returned back to South Waco Texas well contented with our trip having a good ride across the Brazos river after arriving at the station we dismounted and left for our place of a bode feeling all write side up with care now as the day is far Spent we are in hopes that there will be no more accidence happen too night by the prisenors in jail now as i am through we will go too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to nigh is the desire of the familey at home at Ed Costley in Waco Texas

Monday thru Friday May the 11th to 15th 1914- opened up Some what cool as there were a considerable change in the weather and has Kept it up all week untill Friday May 15th 1914 at times all most cold enough for frost and very unfavorable weather there has been a norther the principal part of the week but to day being Friday May the 15th 1914 it is a very nice day at intervals but quite cloudey at times ofter through the day and has the appearance of more falling weather in a Short while if there is there is not a great change and that very Soon Lum (C.C.Costley) and the writer has been making candy today in the city to day to sell too the public and got through of making at or near Eleven Oclock am of to day then moved down to see what could be done in the way of disposing of the candy and worked at the candy buisisess untill about Sun Set then moved the remainder of the candy back too his house and i returned back too my son E D Costleys at the jail we then eat our evening meal and when all were through with there evening meal and the Suppertable was cared far and we had taken our usual rest and had Secured the prisenors by turning the kee on them we then departed too our bed of repose with the hopes of good nights to night is the desire of the writer to night W.E.Costley at my Son E.D.Costley in the Town of waco Texas

Now from Tuesday morning May the 12th was threatning weather being cool morning with threatning of Still more rain cloudey weather the most of the time up to Saturday evening about too oclock of May the 16th 1914 from which it be gan to rain from the west with heavey thunder from which time i were at Crawford Texas had went there on buisiness and the writer stoped off and my son Ed Costley and Sheriff Flemons (Flemings) Son had gone to Bellview and Patton to put up some notices in regard to a local option election to be held on the last day of May AD 1914 to determine wheather whiskey and beer should be sold at that place or not and from Crawford they proceeded to Waldo and from that place to Prairie Chapple to put up notices at each one of those places and to Serve the officers that was appointed by the legal coart of McLennann county Texas with legal papers to hold Said Local opton Election on Said date to determine the result of the Same and in a Short whild after Ed Costley and Sheriff Flemings Son left Crawford going west the rain began to fall and rained up to about five oclock that evening then left off raining and about half past five they returned back to Crawford we then eat a bite and at Six oclock in the evening after the rain had ceased to fall we mounted our selves in the automobeel and drove out through the heavey mud too our destination too the city of Waco Texas. arriving in the Town at about Eight oclock PM. of the Same day and as we approached the town we Seen Several houses on fire and the fireman at work to distingish the fire but loss the burning houses and when we had arrived at our destination and taking a rest we then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer and familey to night W.E.Costley at waco Texas

Sunday May the 17th-1914- Opened up quite a dark gloomey morning very cloudey wind from the South with a prospect of more rain now as it was the Sabbath day and a day of rest we staid clost too indoors and rested but as the writer was suffering so much with pain in back hips and leggs i did not get much rest but the balance of the familey rested quite well and at or near too oclock it began to rain from the north west but about Eight oclock in the morning it rained a heavey rain west of waco but did not get to waco between waco and crawford in McLennan County Texas it is getting to be too much rain for to do much at farming but never the less the farmers has to keep pulling and cutting the weeds and grass down whilst the ground is too wet to plow with the hoe in orde to make corn cotton wheat and oats also garden growth truck of all kind or the people would suffer badley for something to live off ove therefore they have to work and plan a maney way to get through this lonley life that they are put hear to live out in troubles tryals and tribulations heare on this lonley earth here below trustin and working for another work to be prepared to meet there Lord and Savior who riles the universe now as the day is past and gone and we have had our regular food and rest we will depart too our bed of repose hoping that the Lord will gard and protect us through the night and give to Each and evry one of us a peacefull and a happy nights rest to night is the pray of your umble Servant to night W.E.Costley at his Sons in the town of Waco Texas

Monday -May the 18th AD 1914 - Opened up quite a cloudey damp morning wind from the South east blowing mildley with a good prospect of Still more rain and continud in that condition up too about 3 - oclock in the after noon to day from which there was a heavey cloud arose in the South East and come heavey Shower from that direction raining often and on for at least one hour or more and the day ended damp and dreary but never the less it did not Stop the movement in waco they went a head i there traveling too and frow as though nothing had happened what ever but the Sun come out and Shown it Self before it passed a way but in a Short while began to rain a gain and were Still raining when we departed too our bed of repose at ten oclock in the fore noon of to night having Mrs More and her little familey as guest kept us up rather late at night W.E.Costley and wife at there Son ED Costley Jailer at Waco Texas

 

Tuesday May the 19th AD 1914- Opened up quite a cloudey wet morning as it Still was raining from the Eas the wind being in the Same direction and has been raining all day up too the present time being too oclock this evening of the present day. and no Sign of it leaving off rain if any adds the rain is increas fast as it is becoming So there is not any check to it. and the ground thoroughly wet down to the botton rock. Now the writer has not recovered from his Crawford trip as yet as i were so badley stove up that i am badley aflicted with severe pains all over from the heavey jolts from the automobile in our days travel too Crawford and back to waco on account of ill condition of the road as it was very rough indeed washed out and other wise disfigured in maney ways. the travail in waco has been of(f) what is (it) has been for Some time past caused by the continus rain through the day of coare we are not neading it but Still continues to rain all the Same now as the day is about to close we will portake of our Evening food also taken our usual rest then depart to our bed of repose hoping to get a pleasent nights rest to night is the desire of the writer to night W.E.Cosltey at Waco Texas at my Son Ed Costley

Wednesday May the 27th AD 1914- opened up Some what a damp dreary morning Some what cool as it has been raining the last past night and Still continues to mist rain on up to 12 - oclock noon to day with a good prospect of a cotinuation of the Same wind this morning from the east cool and damp up to noon to day the movement in the city today is quite brisk and much traiding going on the times appear to be quite flourishing through out the city with all kind of trade and buisiness of all Kind Streets are full of all kind of maSherry (machinery) that rolls on wheels or other wise. now at or near too oclock PM of today i(t) became quite cloudey in the South west and come up a nother hard Shower from that direction and Keeps it up evry once and a while and Keeps the ground continually wet after eating of my dinner to day too other men and my Self herded Ed Costley's milk cows out to grass on the Jail Keepers yard in order to get Some grass as they were Suffering for grass very much in dead (deed) after getting through i then walked up the Collumbus Street to see about some of the new jewis(h) chirches that they were erecting and when i returned i taken a trip down in too the city of waco to assist C C Costley my Son with his candy buisiness as he was making and Selling candy and when through with him i returned back to Ed Costleys place another one of my Sons we then Eat our noon meal the writer then lay down on his bed and taken a nap of Sleep and after waking up i then assisted a couple of men in hearding the milk cows belonging too my Son on his yard grass to keep then from eating of the flower or going on the Streets and after getting through i then taken a nother trip down in to waco to assist my Son C C Costley in his candy buisiness o gano (?) and in a Short while after arriving at the place it be gon to rain and rained for about too and a half hours quite hard and then eased off to light Showers and left off raining at or near nine oclock in the fore noon of to night, after eating of our evening meal and taking of our usual rest we then departed too our bed of repose hoping too get a good nights rest to night W.E.Costley at my Son E.D. Tuesday May the 21st AD 1914- Opened up quite a cloudey muchey morning the Element Signifies more rain this morning as the clouds are so dense and thick that the Sun can not make its appearance wind from the South but not So Strong earley to day. but appears to increase as the day advances The familey is able to go too the table to eat but Some of the familey not entireley well. all kind of buisiness is on the Stir this morning evry thing Seems to be full of life with a Stiring energy i am some what the worse off of any of the family as i still have these pains hanging over me giving me a deal of trouble besides expense and misery the writer has been quite buisey all day first at the house and then as C C Costleys candy Stand assisted of him in his candy buisiness to aid and assist him in his Sale of candy Sale and worked alday long and at or near three oclock there came up from the South a very heavey rain and rained about one hour then left off raining for the balance of the day when the day past a way and we had taken our usual meals vituals we then departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the writer to night W.E. Saturday May the 22th AD 1914- Opened up quite a nice morning as the clouds are giving a way and giving the Sun a chance to come out and dry the Earth a gain from which i has not done for Some bit be fore and we are having a good prospect of a few dry days a head for the farmer to work out his crop but for all that it is Some what cloudier late this Evening than it has been any time through the day to day So it is not entirley cleard off yet but the prospects are good at present and did blow off at or near the passing a way to day it was a lovely day at any rate and Kept the farmers in the field, at any rate, now as we have enjoyed the blessing of the day and also have taken our usual rest we will depart too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights rest to night is the desire of the familey to night W.E.Costley at Waco at my Son Ed Costley over for the next State ment from WE Costley

Sunday May the 24th AD 1914- Opened up a bright lovly morning bright and clear and bright as the noon days Sun with a prospect of a few days Settled weather now as this is the Sabath day of our lord and a day for rest we will take the advantage of it and rest as evry person neads one day out of Seven to rest in which we did and a glorious day it were althrough at the Sitting of the Sun there were a heavey cloud farmed in the west and as i were in the city of Waco and the buildings being so high i could not see whether the sun past behind the cloud or no but i am confident i(t) did but never the less after Spending a quiet day at rest in the city of waco and eating our three meals vituals and also taken our usual rest we departed too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights to night is the desire of the familey W.E.Costley at my Son E D Costleys in Waco Texas

Tuesday may the 26th AD 1914- Opened up a drearry morning wind from the South East much in appearance of rain and Kept it up untill Something near too Oclock in the afternoon of to day from which time there came a heavey rain from the north west almost a water spout and rained for something near too hours put the streems all out of banks but the Brazos river and continued to rain often and on through the night flooding the streets of Waco Texas WE Costley at Waco

Wednesday May 28th AD 1914 - Opened up a nother damp clouden morning with a great prospect of more rain wind from the South East and at or near too oclock in the after noon to day it come like untoo a water spout and lasted for about three hours playing havock with the streems and bridges all the streems heard of in McLennan County was out of bank and several bridges washed away and sellers in maney places in town of Waco become partley full of water and had to be pumped out and a score of damage done in the city of Waco Texas and Seems as though it will rain the balance of the year now as the day has dis appear and the night has mad(e) its appearance and the familey has eat there three meals vituals to day and we have taken our uaual rest for to night we will go too our bed of repose hoping to get a good nights to nig(ht) is desire of the familey to night WE Costley at Waco at his son ED Costley

Thursday May the 29th AD1914- Opened up quite a cloudey morning wind from the South and drearry morning but the day turned out to be a dull day in Waco as the bridges are all washed a way out on the out side of town so the farmers can not get to town and it made the street scarce of people as a general rule we missed the rain at Waco too day as it all lay north and east as the clouds was dark and muddy all evening in the direction now the day has past off quiet and pleasivly and quetly with out and disturbance in the city as heard of now as we have passed off the day pleasantly and have portaken of our three meals vituals to day and also taken our uaual rest after Eating we will go too our bed of repose hoping to recive a good nights rest to night is the desire of the familey Dean Costley is better today as he has been sick for a day or so.

Friday May the 29th AD 1914- Opened up quite a wet morning as it Showered rain in the Earley morning and has been and drearry all morning wind from the Sough east blowing quite cool with all appearance of rain that could be expected not to be pooring down at all time but did come a few Showers during the day but heavey rains was falling through out the day in maney directions from waco but as yet has not rain but one time up to June the 26th and that rain fell on Friday June the 19th -1914 of the present month

Friday June 26the opened up a clar bright clear morning wind from the South very warm the familey arose Some what late this morning but after getting prepared for work anney Stirling Soon prepared our morning meal whilst T J Stirling fed and cared for the Stock and T J. Stirling milked his cow and the writer pumped the Stock for the Stock to get a good drink before going in too the pasture and returned too the house and Eat our morning meal
