Original letter.

theChoctaw nation Nov 26 1863

Dear Copanion I seat my self to drop you a few lines to enform you that I am well and doing tolirabel well hoping when thes few lines coms to hand they will find you and the children well I want you to write how you heir (are) giting along and how the water (in the creek) is I have got a pony her(e) and it is cripel and I cant send it til it gits well I want you to send me a copel (couple) pare of socks and a pair of mittens back by John Love I want you to try and get leather and fit the children shoe, mail if you can if you heir needing any thing I want you to write to me mabe so I can assist you in giting it you rote to me about the babe being sick and I want you to write to me as quick as you can for I will be uneasy til I her(e) from to it.

One of the boys come in and he saw old Adem bibels in bonham he sid that you was all well and doing well and that my horse was all run off I want you to do the best you can and if they need feeding feed them write to me as soon as you can for that is all the sadisfaction I see is when I her(e) from you you must excuze my short letter for I only had a few minits to write in

Sariah I want you to writ to me whether Sam has paid you or not and if he hant and you need money call on him rite to me what he is doing whether he is paing any attention to the catle or not So nothing more at present only I remain your affectenate husband until death from C Brown to his Compannon

My Dearest Wife

These few lines leaves me well and I hope the same may reach you and the children well & hearty I have no news to write you only we are on our way back to Texas we are now in three days march of Texas we will go to Boggy Depo to morrow night and I suppose we will go from there to Dokesvill in the Chickasaw Nation and from there to Parris Texas some of this is only news but I suppose our General says we will go to Texas to recruit our horses and it is some talk that there will be some of us will get a chance to go home but I do not know how many or who they will be but I will come home if there is any chance for me to come I have got you a very good Indian pony if I can get her to you I thought I had a chance of sending her to you but it has failed so far but I think I will have a chance before long to send her to you she paces very well and is very gentle and I would like very much that you had her you must excuse this badly written letter as it is written by fire light I have no news of importance to wright we are all getting along very well except our horses we are not getting any corn now for our horses we have been without two days and it will be tomorrow night before we get any more I would like very much to see you and the children and I hope it wont be long before I will have a chance to come home but I dont know about that yet I am as ever your husband until Dath C Brown

Deare wife I imbrace this optuney once more in life to anster to your letter wich was received here with your and these few line leve me not very well at this time But I hope that I will soon be well I hope when these few lines come to home they may find you well and the children and uncle Charley and ant and all was now dowing well I am very sorry to be inform that mr Brown now has been as he has. I am very sorry to be inform that mr samuel morgan has tret you way he have I didnt think that he woon treten you as he has but they aint no talen what a command will four these boys

I am sorry to her that your pork hogs is gone. I have bin sick about 33 weeks and have taken 23 douzes of medessens and I am very weak of the chels and fever but I think that I am on the mend. I want you to kill all the Red Bunch if you can get them ___ you must work all the ingurye off my horses that you can and if there up them I want you to send John after them _____ Lowry has bin to see me and have sent your mare by him to your mothers. I wood sent her home to you but I got her crippled. You have ritten that it is still dry thare yet I want to kno how you have managed or not for water to you can when spring come gether all the cattel you can and if sam morgan com to help in the spring you can tell him to gether the cattel that I have consided that he has forfet his contract and he can let them a lone that I keep

Camp Garland Decmber the 18th 1863

Dear Wife

This leaves me well hoping it may reach you in due time and find you and the children well. I have had a few chills but have been able to go all the time I have a chance to send by Liuetenant J. L. Mcelroy for clothes and I want you to send me two pair of Pants and two pair of socks and one pair of mittens. there is one man in each company Detailed to bring clothes to us he will come to the house and get them or tell you where he wants you to send them to. I am at this time driving a team in the Brigade I have been Detailed as a Brigade teamster. I want you to write to me what you have done in regard to the Tax I want you to write what Sam Morgan is doing and the news generally in that part of the country Alonzo come over to see me and stayed with me two days his mother and the balance of them was well Sarah has another fine Daughter Jo has a final Discharge from the Army. the last I heared from George he was at Alexander he was well the reason I send home for clothes is that I understand the Detail for the Bargade dont draw-any clothes but get one Dollar per day extra of there pay in the company I send you two Silver finger Rings the first that I ever made and I want you to wear them and Remember who made them and sent them to you I want you to take care of your self and do the best you can for yourself and try to raise the children rite the Brigade is going on a raid they will start monday I dont know exactly where they will go to nor how long they will be gone we are at work here puting up winter quarters and it is thought we will stay here all winter we are on the line between the Indian Nation and Arkansas about 40miles from Clarksville and in Sight of Lanesport Ark. we are on the Bank of Red River we have no tents yet and no likely hood of getting som there is Sickness in the Regiment there is no men gets to go home only them that are sick and them that get a Detail. I dont expect I will get to come soon as I took a few days and went home after the balance had gone a across the river but rest assurred that I will come home as soon as I can get the chance I think of keeping the place where I am as long as I can as there no standing gard.

We have had praching here evry day and night since Sunday and are Babtising from three to eight per day nothing more at presant write soon and direct your letters as usual Your Husband

I have sent one gun barll and all the lock and lewver and plenty of shoot and 7 caps for the boys to ware and them is the caps that we have drown for to ware and I haven drown now clothen yet I sent them by John Love & you rought to me to now where Bill ever was sent here after clothen are not he was sent after them and he was not to be gone but a weke and he has not got back yet and the wae he got off he sed that his wife was turne out off a house an here father turn her out I want to now whether he did sow or not and he send his love and respects to unkel charley and ant and want them to take good care off them self sow I must bring my few remarks to a close by saying I remane your most affection husband until deth sow you all well untell I ritch you from C Brown to Sarah E. Camp Garland January the 14 th 1864

Mrs Sarah E. Brown

It becomes my painful duty to inform you that your Beloved Husband Caleb is no more he departed this life yesterday evening about Sundown after a Suffering of about twelve days Since he was taken confined to his bed he died in camp he had all the care and attention that one fellow Soldier could give another he will be burried this evaning in the honors of war his loss is greatly regretted no one kew but to love he was he had the entire love of all who knew him his horse and money will be taken care of and sent to you he had too hundred and Seventy four Dollars in confederate

his effects will be sent to you by the first opportunity and the bearer of his horse and other effects will give you a more manute detail of the case and attention he made no will and Said but little about dying I think Mr R D Bishop will probably get a furlough Shortly and if So he can tell you all about his death

Deare Wife I would imbrace this optuney one to Address you a few lines to inform you that I am well at this time hoping when these few lines reach your hand that they may fine you & the children well & doing well & I haven anything to righ that would inrest you. the times here are very dull the Brigad has got Back off there cont they diden effect eneything atall genel guno take sick & he cudden command the Bragad & then they was a genel Dispientment throw out the commands that was geering to assist him majer Gipson had a fit with the feds & the feds whip them teill the mager Gipson an 10 of his ___ & the rest off his mend turen over to the feds & went with them they was inpented compney rased in Ark & they was a order com to hid cortere (country) Last night to hold our saved in redery to goe at Eney houre to reenforce Price & they are great meney men sick an die & hare died from exposher aff Being in the cold & one of them is C. Brown wich I miss gratly all thou it is at A dell but will all hope to Pay soner are Later he was willing to deye he was in his rit Sanity untell he deyed he diedeng have much to say he tanck grat avle About his wife and family he wanted to see them & his mother in law before he dyed his I and his frends tuck as good cere of him as they cud he deyed with the tyeford fever if it had bin my Brother I cuden mist him eney worse his spirit is all most Broken my hart it makes me think that my time is at hand & I hop when my time.

Mrs S.E. Brown. Dear madam I deam (deem) it nessery to address you a few lines in regard of your deare beloved deceased husband & to your happenes & in regard of your happenes hereafter your deare husband departing from this world on the 13 of this month. & he was well

taken care of when he was sick & his friends regret the last of him. He was deslenty Bared (decently buried) before he died he tauck grat deule (talked great deal about)___ ___ you & he crave to see you & his children & his mother in law before he died he was tearful of his death he was writing(?) to keep ___ be since life deant (didn't) fear death, I think that his sargeant(?) by him in heaven no sorrows nor troubles that he didn't want for you to greave after him for its the det (debt) that we all have to pay sooner or later and hope to meet you in heaven where parting is no more he said that he want you to raise his children to preserve all things that so ever that you(r) God have command them to do & he requested me to write you to have

nothing more to do with Sam Morgan in because of them carry off your cattle & tell him that he ___ this he Sam Morgan had forfited contract

in recurn (return) aff taking care of his stock but you can do as you please I will take care of his affects until I can have oppertunity to bring them or send them by way by som friend I mist him very much he was a mana that great ____ the last of him he almost broken my hart ___ heaven saw early ___ sent the bece made me think but me time will regret you pray for me in your prayors I wish to be rememberd by you & you(r)
