A quilt that is special
(with a special cat Misty on it who miraculously survived a seriously illness
last year). I went to an estate sale
at an old home place north of Pottsboro near Preston at the home of a deceased
lady I found two Flower Garden quilt tops out in her shed that were
hand pieced and beautifully colored coordinated. I guess she never
got around to quilting them. I don't know how long they had been
out there but they had been protected and were in great shape.
I discovered who made the quilt top
that I quilted, picture above when I found an article in Ancestors &
Decendants of Grayson County,Texas page 436,about the Sheltons in Grayson
County, I knew that the estate sale near Lake Texoma where I bought these
quilt tops was an aunt of Joe Max Shelton's, prominent Sherman attorney.
I didn't realize then that they are close relatives of mine, so I quilted
a family quilt after all!! The article explains the connection, those
Sheltons and my Sheltons have a common ancestor in Eliphaz
Greene Berry Shelton of Honey Grove Tx.
Over the course of the next three years,
during the winter time, at night I would put one of these quilts (there
were two of them, same pattern) in a small round quilting frame and drape
the rest over me for warmth and quilt those two quilts. It's the
first one I ever did and now I respect those ladies who quilted so much.
They aren't as well quilted as they were pieced together by the other lady
of bygone days, but I thought of her often, and still do. These quilts
have warmed my daughter and my husband and me.
The Sunbonnet Sue Pillows were made
from old quilts from Frank and Natalie Bauman's families.
