{George} died at his home near Enterprise Monday, April 3, 1903
at 11 o'clock. A good man has gone from our midst; a kind neighbor, a loving
and indulgent father. Mr. Porter was 56 years old. He leaves 9 children
at home and one son married and living in Greer County, Oklahoma, who came
home to attend the funeral. Their mother died some six years ago. The entire
community joins in sympathy with the grief stricken children. The funeral
was largely attended. He was buried in the Keirsey grave yard. Services
were conducted by Rev. W. B. Herndon of Sherman.
George Robert Porter, aged 56 years,
died at his home ten miles northwest of the city Sunday, April 6, 1903
of pneumonia. He was buried at the Keirsey graveyard six miles northwest
of Sherman, Rev. W.B. Herndon officiated. Mr. Porter was a member of the
Methodist Church and was liked by his neighbors, for the funeral cortage
was nearly a mile long. His wife died eight years ago, leaving ten children
to his care, several of whom are now grown. He was survived by five sons,
Pleasant M. Porter of Greer County, OK; James R.; William; Charlie H.;
and George Ed, all of the home; five daughters, Della; Minnie; Martha Elizabeth;
Lillie and Lottie Emily all of the home.
Gracie Elizabeth Porter
Gracie Elizabeth Porter was born 20
January 1857 in Dekalb County Alabama, the daughter of James M. and Emily
Musgrove Shankles. She came to Grayson County Texas in 1869 from Missoui
with her step-father Mr. James York. She married 15 September 1875 to George
Robert Porter. To this union was born five sons and five daughters. Gracie
passed away at her home on July 2, 1895 and burial took place 3 July in
the Keirsey Cemetery near Pottsboro.
She is survived by her husband George
and her children, Pleasant M.; James R.; William; Charlie; George Ed; Della;
Minnie; Lizzie; Lillie and Lottie all of the home. One brother, James M.
Shankles of Pottsboro, Texas.
FORMER GRAYSON COUNTY SHERIFF DIES
Veteran law officer, Pleasant M. Porter,
79, one time sheriff of Grayson County, died Wednesday at 9 p.m. in a local
hospital. He had been ill for the last three years. His home was 620 S.
Charles. He was a Mason for 50 years.
Funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m.
in Waldo Funeral Chapel. Rev. Orrin D. Reed associate pastor of the First
Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Hank Moody, John
Harper, Fritz Mangrum, Charlie Steel, Ed Bilger, and Robert Dean. Burial
will be in West Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Porter was a native of Grayson County
and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Robert Porter. He was the husband
of the late Ethel Alice Elliott Porter. Before moving back to herman in
1914, he served as city marshall in Hollis, Oklahoma for 15 years. He was
a city policeman here for eight years and constable of Precint 1 for 10
years. He was elected sheriffof Grayson County in 1939, serving two terms.
Due to ill health, he retired in 1943. He was a member of the First Baptist
Church and A.F.& A.M. Masonic Lodge 117.
Survivors are three sons, Joe M. Porter
and George W. Porter, both of Shrman and Sidney P. Porter of Lynnwood,
California; two daugters,Mrs. Pat Brackett of Gainesville, and Mrs. Sven
Henningsen of Copehagen, Denmark, four brothers, Bill Porter, Jim Porter,and
George Ed all of Pottsboro and Charlie Porter of Denison; three sisters,
Miss Lizzie Porter and Miss Lottie Porter of Pottsboro; Mrs. Harry Orr
of Sherman; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
WILLIAM (BILL)
PORTER
Pottsboro - Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church, Pottsboro, for William
(Bill) Porter 68, of Sherman route3, a farmer and stockman, who died at
11 a.m. Thursday in his home.
The Rev. Carol Shaw and the Rev. R.P.Bryan
of Fort Worth,Baptist minister, will conduct the services. Burial will
be in the Enterprise Cemetery, directed by Waldo Funeral Home, Sherman.
Mr. Porter was born on February 10,
1890, a son of the late George and Gracie Shankles Porter. In 1915 he married
Miss Ova Terry. Mr. Porter was a life long resident of Pottsboro, had worked
for Kraft Food Co. for many years, and for Conway Oil Company before retiring
two years ago. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife, one son, B.R.
Porter of Garland; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Thompson of Sherman route 3
and Mrs. Percy Morton of Denison; three brothers, J.R. Porter of Sherman
and C.H. Porter and Ed Porter both of Denison; three sisters, Mrs. H. E.
Orr of Sherman and Miss Lizzie and Miss Lottie Porter both of Denison;
four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

PORTER
Services for Ova Steele Porter, 86,
will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Pottsboro Baptis Church, with Rev. L.H.
Sublett officiating. Burial will be in Enterprise Cemetery, under the direction
of Johnson-Moore Funeral Home.
Mrs. Porter a resident of Pottsboro,
was born November 23, 1897, in the Enterprise Community, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. G.M. Terry. She received her schooling in Enterprise. She married
William Porter in October 1914 in the Enterprise Community.He died in 1957.
Mrs. Porter was a housewife, Baptist and member of the VFW Auxillary.
Survivors are a son, Bill of Gatlinburg,
Tennessee; two daughters, Sallie Thompson of Sherman, Grace Morton of Denison;
two brothers, John Morrison Terry of Sadler; A.S. Terry of Denison, two
sisters, Lettie Gibson of Houston, Zemmie Wilson of Pottsboro; four
grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Brad Lowe, Bill
Terry Wilson, V. L. Wilson, Shelley Hall, Mack Hayes, John Terry.
The family will be at the funeral home
from 7 to 10 tonight.
CHARLIE
H. PORTER
Charlie H. Porter, 75, retired farmer
died 7 December 1966 at 9 a.m. in a local nursing home after a four month
illness.
Funeral will be held Friday at 10:30
a.m. in the Bratcher Chapel with Charles Kuhn and Cecil Bunch, Armstrong
Church of Christ ministers, officiating. Burial will be in the Keirsey
Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Born in Grayson County December 31,
1891, and was married January 3, 1914.
Survivors include a son,Harold Porter
of Denison; three daughters, Mrs. O.R. DeFratus and Mrs. C. W. Rasco, both
of Denison; and Mrs. Marvin Eads of Mesquite; a sister Miss Lottie Porter
of Denison; and 10 grandchildren.
MRS. ALPHEA PORTER
Denison- Services for Mrs. Alphea Porter,
84, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bratcher Funeral Home. She
died Wednesday, 29 October 1970 in a local nursing home. Her home address
was 412 N. 8th St.
Mrs. Porter was born November 26, 1895
in Grayson County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Dooley. She married
Charlie H. Porter in Sherman on January 3, 1915. He preceded her in death
in 1966.She was a member of th Church of Christ.
Leoff Sharp will officiate with burial
in the Kiersey Cemetery.
Survivors are one son, Harold of Denison;
three daughters, Mrs. Allene DeFratus, Mrs. C. W. Rasco and Mrs. Marvin
Eads, all of Denison; four brothers, Andrew Dooley of Baytown, Lloyd and
Lewis Dooley of Bartlesville and Gumby Dooley of Dallas, six sisters, Mrs
Clea Hester and Mrs. Doris Nickolson, both of Denison, Mrs. Marie Elliott,
Mrs.Clara Smith and Mrs. Dana Dequese, all of Sherman, and Mrs. Ina Bell
of Dallas; 10 grandchildren.
The family will be at te funeral chapel
Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be B. E. Norman, Claude
Woodley, F. O. Smith, Charlie Eads, Ira Wright and Frank Hoover.
