the Calhoun, & Hestand Family
Enoch Jacob Covey's parents were Johnson Marshall (John) Covey, born June 11, 1861 in Millwood, Collin County, Texas, who died January 18, 1841 in Sherman and is also buried at West Hill Cemetery. During World War I, Johnson Marshall Covey and his wife owned the Collinsville Hotel in Collinsville. (These were my great-grandparents.)
Johnson Marshall Covey was the son of a Texas pioneer, Enoch Moore Covey, originally from Tennessee and relocated in 1831 with his family to what soon after became Georgetown, Pettis County, Missouri.
JOHNSON MARSHALL COVEY (Born to Enoch Covey and wife Maranda O. Hunt on June 11, 1861 in Millwood, Collin County, Texas; died in Sherman January 18, 1941. During World War I, he owned and operated the Collinsville Hotel in Collinsville, Texas.His nine children in their birth order were Melinda Lou (Lula), Sallie Weevil, Enoch Jacob, Ella Mae, Otis Marshall, Ida Maude who died in infancy, Artie Theodora (Theo, a female), Clara Belle Covey and Jewell Marvin Covey. Four of them are buried in West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, Grayson County, Texas.
His two youngest sisters listed above were Julia Minerva Covey (Mrs. William Levi Goodman) of Millwood, Rockwall and Dallas, Texas; and Malonia Cornelia Covey (Mrs. J. Leonard Puckett) of Millwood and Rockwall, Texas.
Sherman Democrat January 20, 1941 Sherman, Texas, Jan 20 1941 - Funeral services for Johnson Marshall Covey, 79, were held here. The Rev. R. E. Potter of Kemp officiated, assisted by the Rev. Claude Johnston. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery. Mr. Covey was born June 11, 1861 in Millwood, Collin County, Texas, a son of Enoch and Maranda Hunt Covey. He was married Aug. 9 1881 on a ferryboat in the middle of the Red River to Miss Lydia E. Covey, who survives him. He came to Sherman from Collin County fifty-eight years ago and was a stock dealer and farmer for fifty years, retiring in 1935. Mr. Covey was a member of the Travis Street Methodist Church. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Sallie Wallace of McAlester, Okla., Mrs. Lula O'Dell of Bakersfield, Calif., Mrs. Clara Bell Zachery of Bakersfield, and Mrs. Artie Theo Price of El Paso, Texas, two sisters, Mrs. W. L. Goodman of Dallas and Mrs. Leonard Puckett of Rockwall, Texas, seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Enoch Moore Covey and his wife Maranda O. Hunt moved their family from Henry County, Missouri and settled in Millwood, Collin County, Texas before 1860. Maranda O. Hunt Covey is believed to be buried in Millwood Cemetery, Millwood, Collin County, Texas and Enoch Moore Covey is buried in Rockwall City Cemetery in Rockwall, Rockwall County, Texas. These two are ancestors of some the West Hill Covey burials that have the name Albion A. (Albion Alvey Covey) attached to them. (Enoch and Maranda were my great-great grandparents.)
Enoch Jacob Covey's mother was Lydia Elizabeth Covey born March 21, 1866 in Montrose, Henry County, Missouri and died November 26, 1952 in Bakersfield, California. Lydia is buried next to her husband at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman as well.
Lydia Elizabeth Covey was the daughter of Jacob C. Covey born September 9, 1835 in Georgetown, Pettis County, Missouri and died December 1, 1900 and is buried in Friendship Cemetery west of Sherman. Her mother was Sarah Middleton Melton, born January 15, 1838 in Kentucky and whose parents John T. Melton and Mary (Middleton?) were living in Henry County, Missouri in 1850. Sarah Middleton Melton Covey died September 12, 1894 and is buried under the same stone as her husband in Friendship Cemetery west of Sherman.
Jacob C. Covey and Sarah Middleton Melton originally went in what appears to have been a family wagon train with other Covey siblings to Millwood, Collin County, Texas before 1860, returned to Missouri, came back to Texas during the Civil War, returned to Missouri and came back to Texas again about 1873.
Both of Enoch Jacob Covey's grandfathers (Enoch Moore Covey and Jacob C. Covey) were Texas Confederate soldiers with the Partisan Rangers and both have pension records on file in the Texas State Archives.
My father's birth certificate says Enoch Jacob Covey was a stock dealer (livestock). Enoch and Carrie Belle O'Mary were married in early 1909 in Sherman . Belle, born January 27, 1889 in Rogers, Tennessee, died June 5, 1981 in El Paso, Texas where she moved about 1930. She is buried next to another son in Restlawn Memorial Cemetery in El Paso (unfortunately, her marker showing her date of birth is wrong and needs to be changed from reading 1899 to accurately red 1889). She never remarried after her husband's death.
Carrie Belle O'Mary was the daughter of Owen O. O'Mary and Nancy Adeline Reynolds who moved by train from Rogers (now Rogersville, I believe), Tennessee to Whitesboro, Texas in mid-March of 1889. She had a number of brothers and sisters in Sherman: Luther, Arthur, Ethel, Tessie, Charlie, Earl, and Edgar, most of whom eventually went to Wichita Falls, Texas.
Enoch Jacob Covey and Carrie Bell O'Mary's baby, Roy Covey, buried next to Enoch Jacob Covey at West Hill died on October 16, 1916, not long after his first birthday. Neither of them have headstones there, but they are in a plot surrounded by concrete with the name COVEY on a step up to the gravesites.
I can identify most of the Coveys you have listed in West Hill Cemetery as relatives and identify who belongs to whom. Offhand, the ones who are Enoch Jacob Covey's siblings are: Ottis Covey, who was Otis Marshall Covey and was married and had a child; Marvin Covey, who was Marvin Jewell Covey.
Most of the rest of the West Hill Covey burials you have listed so far are related, some of them descendants of Enoch Moore Covey and Maranda O. Hunt of Millwood, Collin County, Texas.
A few of the West Hill Covey burials descend from Enoch Moore and Jacob C. Covey's father's (Joshua David Covey of Virginia and wife Lydia Adamson, both of Tennessee and Missouri) brother, William Covey and wife Susannah Godbey of Virginia and Missouri.
Clarence C. Covey born in February, 1893 in Texas, who was killed in France during World War I.
Lydia Covey -- who is my great-grandmother Lydia Elizabeth Covey who was married on a ferry in the middle of the Red River (probably on the old historic Colbert's ferry) where, I read that so many marriages were performed that the folks in Denison called the river the "Sea of Matrimony!"
This family also has burials in Akers Cemetery, and some of the Calhouns buried at West Hill are also Enoch Moore Covey descendants of his daughter Luisa Jane Covey (Johnson Marshall Covey's sister) and John C. Calhoun, both of whom are buried in West Hill.
