Welcome to the Austin
Street Cemetery
Est. Circa 1849
The Austin Street Cemetery predates the
Civil War with existing stones dated as early as 1852 and as late as 1885.
It is the oldest City cemetery. The land where it sits was originally
owned by Samuel Blagg. In 1849, Blagg deeded the land to John Jennings
who in turn sold it to Daniel B. Lyons of Wisconsin in 1876.
Mr. Lyons then named the area “Post Oak Addition” and presented it as an
addition to the City of Sherman. The Austin Street Cemetery
contains the final resting places of members of the Fitch, Richards and
Cargo families who were all related by marriage, Bomar and Randolph families
and a handful of individuals. These early settlers came from
Tennessee and Alabama and several of their children were prominent in the
founding of the City of Sherman. Descendants of these families can
also be found buried across Hwy. 75 in West Hill Cemetery. Please
see the map key below to locate specific graves here at Austin Street.
The cemetery was restored in 2008 by
Ryan Williams of Boy Scout Troop XV, as his Eagle Project. We ask
that you respect those that are buried here, their families and the restoration
efforts put forth by Mr. Williams and his volunteers. Please leave
the grounds in the condition that you found them.
