county TX.He was the son of James Madison BATSELL and Mary L. REYNOLDS,
who both died in Whitewright and are buried at Batsell Chapel Cemetery.

but was next to Pitman's Chapel .)During his lifetime Charles William BATSELL, Sr. was a Livery Man,
Merchant, Capitalist, Grocer, President of the Sherman City Street
Railway Company (that ran the donkey pulled cars down the center of
Travis Street), County Commissioner.Charles William BATSELL, Sr.
first married on April 22, 1863 in Grayson county TX to Elizabeth
CLEMENT.
She was the daughter of Bluford CLEMENT and Rebecca DAVENPORT.
She was born March 20, 1845 in Pilot Grove, Grayson county TX
died January 18, 1879 in Sherman, Grayson county TX
buried January 18, 1879 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Grayson county
TX.They had three known children:

She was the daughter of William A. REEVES and Louisa O. WILLIFORD.Following the death of his first wife Charles William BATSELL, Sr. wed a
second time to Rosa Florence THOMAS on December 31, 1879 in Barton county KS. Rosa was born Abt. September 12, 1855 in Covington, Kenton county KY died August 10, 1940 (at the home of her daughter from her first
marriage,May Merle TUTT (aka: Mae or May or Tillie BATSELL) was the mother of Charles Batsell WINSTEAD who was credited by J. Edgar Hoover for firing the fatal shot killing the notorious outlaw of the era - John Dillinger).
Rosa was buried on August 11, 1940 in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman,
Grayson county TX.
Her first husband had been Montgomery Royston TUTT. They had been
divorced.BATSELL and THOMAS did not have any children.
During the Civil War Charles William BATSELL, Sr. served in CSA,
16th Cavalry Company G from Grayson county TX.

Who Are in Indigent Circumstances I, C. W. BATSELL .... That I was
honorably discharged or surrendered was never either discharged or
surrendered. I am still a confederate soldier in so far as formal
discharge, parol or surrender are concerned. My command quit after Lee's
surrender. ... 10. What was the letter of your company, number of
battalion, regiment or battery? G Regiement <sic> 16 ... Cavalerry
<sic> afterwards dismounted ... Affidavit of Witnesses John GREGG and
Saunders GREGG ... we further make oath to the following facts touching
the applicant's service in the Confederate Army: Mr. C. W. BATSELL, who
has up to two years ago been a resident of Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas,
was a member of our father's brigade during the entire Civil War. Our
father occupied the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and we have heard Mr.
BATSELL and father relate their experiences together during the war,
many times. Mr. BATSELL is a man of exemplary habits and the soul of
honor. We certify that the facts set forth in his application are
correct and true in every respect. Father's name - Lieutenant - Colonel
E. P. GREGG, commanding 16th Texas Cavalry, and we now have in our
possession his commission as such. We desire to commend Mr. BATSELL in
the highest terms and recommend that he be given the Confederate pension
as applied for."
"Oct. 7, 1914 To Whom This May Come: This will introduce to favorable
acquaintance Mr. C. W. BATSELL of this city, whom we have known
personally for many years. Mr. BATSELL was originally located in
Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas, but for the past two years has resided in
Brownsville. We desire to commend Mr. BATSELL in the highest terms as a
man if integrity, reliability and of superb habits. He is the soul of
honor. Mr. BATSELL is now 75 years of age and is an applicant for a
Confederate pension, having served in the Confederate Army during the
Civil War in the 16th Texas Cavalry, which was commanded by the writer's
father, Lieutenant - Colonel E. P. GREGG. We are very anxious for Mr.
BATSELL to secure this pension and any assistance rendered him in this
connection will be considered as a personal favor by the writer. As
further reference to Mr. BATSELL's character we respectfully mention the
names of Hon. This. J. BROWN, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of
Texas, Hon. Allison MAYFIELD, Railroad Commissioner, and Hon. Ice B.
REEVES, Representative of Grayson County. Commending Mr. BATSELL to the courtesies and consideration of those with whom he may come in contact,
