Mary was referred to as "Little Mary." She was buried in a cemetery
somewhere near Dixie. It is now believed that she was buried in Eskew Cemetery,
west of Dixie.
The following was taken from a family newsletter written by Dusty
Williams:
Mary Ann Stubblefield
"Mary Ann Stubblefield was born on January 20,1898 to Thomas Madison
Stubblefield and Alice (Bartley) Stubblefield. She was the sister to my
great-great grandmother, Lois Edna (Stubblefield) Goldston. It's sad to
think back on it now, today not many people know about the little girl
who walked this earth for but a short time. She lived to be three years
old, almost a month away from being four. She died on December 02, 1901
in the Pleasant View area (now apart of Sandusky). It is still not certain
asto where she is buried, but we now have a pretty good idea. My great
grandmothers brother-in-law, Charles Tuley said he remembered going with
Lois and some other people to the cemetery where
Mary was buried. He said that the cemetery was on a country road
west of Sandusky (the Pleasant View area). There are only two cemeteries
in that direction, one is Sandy Springs which has been ruled out, and the
other is Eskew Cemetery. Mary's mother, Alice Bartley was orphaned as a
young girl and was taken in by the Eskew Family. We believe that
this is the Cemetery where Mary is buried. I plan to get a stone
put in the cemetery in her memory. Eskew Cemetery is a farley large fencedin
area, but there are few stones remaining. Most of the stones are spaced
out throughout the cemetery, but you can see where the rows are,and there
are several indentions in the ground. Mary was the second of ten children
born to the Stubblefield's. She died before most of her other siblings
had been born, but her parents kept her memory alive
in all their children. The reason I am writing this article is so
no one forgets her. What a shame it would be to loose another person to
the endless cycle of time. Keep the memory of Little Mary Stubblefield
alive in your heart and share her story with others so she will never be
forgotten. Remind people that a hundred years may pass, but we will still
remember the shortest and smallest lives no matter how fast time passes.
It has almost been one hundred and three years since Mary last walked on
this land. Though her walk on earth was short her memory remains in the
heart of all those who remember."
Update 2009-Mary Ann Stubblefield is buried in Eskew Cemetery-from
Orval Phelps who said his mother, Ada (Mary's sister) said that she was
buried there.
