Death of Raymond Vacek.

Raymond Vacek, a young man who resided in this section for a number of years, and who was very popular with all our people, committed suicide at El Campo Tuesday before Christmas, and the remains were buried at Dubina the following day. Strychnine self administered was the cause of his death. The unfortunate man was a victim of drink, and propbably feeling that he could not quit same, determined to end his existence. He was a man of handsome physique, genial, generous to a fault, and personally very popular. He leaves a widow and several children. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the bereaved ones.

Franziska Vogt

"Grandmother Vogt Passes Away"

Reaching the age of 95 years, 5 months and 7 days, Grandmother Franziska Vogt, one of our most interesting and esteemed citizens closes the last chapter of her life 24 April 1931. She was born 17 October 1835 in Germany and came to Fayette County with her mother, Mrs. Geo. Willrich, and sisters and brothers in the year 1847.  Her father, a prominent judge in the old country, had come over the year before to locate a home for the family.  Texas gave three hundred acres of land to every man with family who settled upon its soil, land seemingly untouched by man, with wild beasts and snakes roaming at will.  They went through many trials during these days, and to hear grandmother recite some of the history of her younger days was interesting.  In 1928 the Journal reproduced an account entitled: "Black Beans of Death", a story told by the subject of this sketch on her 93rd birthday anniversary, which had been published in the Austin American.  She recalled the solemn ceremony of 1848, when a child of thirteen she rode horseback to the site where the Mier prisoners of war were reburied with honor and praise, on Kreische's Bluff.  After the death of her husband, John Vogt, 22 years ago, she continued to live at the old home near O'Quinn, where her youngest son, Julius, now resides.  About ten years ago she came to live in her declining years with her daughter Mrs. E. Knigge of this city.  It may truly be said of her, she won the love of all with whom she came in contact, and will be greatly missed.  Mrs. Vogt was the mother of eight children, five sons and three daughters, of whom three preceded her in death: Mrs. H. Schroeder of this city and Geo. Vogt of Schulenburg; Hans died at the age of 8 years.  The living are: E.R. Vogt of Schulenburg, Mrs. Fritz Nollkamper, Mrs. E. Knigge and Fritz Vogt of this city and Julius Vogt of O'Quinn.  Twenty-three grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, besides two step sisters, Mrs. Anna Gross of San Antonio and Mrs. Louise Koehler of this city are among the sorrowing relatives. Interment took place at the Cedar Cemetery Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev.  C.O. Boatman officiating.

Fayette’s Oldest Citizen Dies

Franziska Vogt, nee Willrich, was born in Ulzen, Hanover, Germany on October 17, 1835, the youngest daughter of the first marriage of her father, George C. Willrich, or Judge in his native town.  In the year 1846 she came to Texas, together with her stepmother, following her father who came here two years previous, settling on the Bluff, about four miles South of La Grange.  The old house she grew to womanhood is still standing.

She married John R. Vogt on January 13th, 1857.  Eight children were born to this union, of whom three died, Margartha, wife of Herman Schraeder of La Grange; George Vogt of Schulenburg and John, who died at the age of seven years.  Her husband, John R. Vogt, preceded her in death 22 years ago.  Surviving are five children:  E. R. of Schulenburg; Charlotte, wife of Fritz Nollkamper of La Grange; Anna, wife of Emil Knigge of La Grange; and Julius of O’Quin, he is living on the old homestead, the house was build in 1856 and was occupied by the couple for 53 years or until the death of her husband on Sept. 14, 1909.

Grandmother Vogt, as she was known to the entire community, was at the time of her death the oldest citizen in Fayette County and the only survivor of those who were present when the bones of the Dawson Company, who were killed near Goliad in 1846 by the Mexican Army were buried on Monument Hill in the year 1848.  She was blessed with remarkable memory, she at the time was 12 years of age and could remember the principal speech on that occasion by Lubbock, almost every word, he was afterwards Governor of Texas.

She died at the home of her youngest daughter, Anna Knigge of La Grange, on April 24th, and was laid to rest in the family burial ground at Cedar Cemetery on April 25th., beside her beloved husband, with whom she shared rainy days and sunshine for 53 years.

Surviving to mourn her death are five children, nineteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

To them, the Sticker tenders its most sincere sympathy.

George Vogt Dead

It was a distinct shock to this community when the word went out that George Vogt had died Saturday morning from blood poisoning, following a minor operation in Dallas about four weeks previous.  Specialists had been summoned to his bedside and every thing that skilled physicians and faithful nursing could accomplish was done without avail.

Geo. Vogt was born at Cedar post office, about fourteen miles from Schulenburg, on March 4, 1868.  In 1891 he was united in marriage to Lena Nollkemper and of this union five children were born, Olivia, Robert, Julia, Ruth, and George, Jr., all of whom survive him, together with his faithful wife, his mother, Mrs. Francis Vogt, of La Grange, who came to Texas in 1846, and is in her 82nd year, yet distinctly remembers the services attending the demise of the famous Dawson company near Bluff.  He is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Judge E. R. Vogt, of this city; Fritz Vogt, of La Grange; Julius Vogt, who still lives on the old homestead at Cedar; Mrs. Schroeder, of La Grange; Mrs. Nollkemper, of Swiss Alp; and Mrs. Knigge, of La Grange.

To the writer this is a deep personal loss, as during the few years of our friendship his unfailing good nature has ever been a source of comfort, his sterling honesty and upright manhood an inspiration.  During the eight years he has been in business in this city his every business transaction has been stamped with the mark of fairness to all.  Now that his life work has been accomplished and the dark curtain that hides the beautiful beyond from mortal eyes, has been softly drawn aside for his passage, the sorrowing family and friends can console themselves with the knowledge that the God above, who supervises our incoming and our outgoing with His infinite wisdom, has balanced his Book of Life and written across the page those words of boundless meaning “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

The impressive Masonic service was given Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large number of friends from all part of the county.  The sermon was delivered by Rev. Paul Pieponbrok, and the Herman Sohns lodge, of which he was a member, assisted.

Thus closes a life of unfailing devotion to his family, of unselfish service and uncompromising integrity toward his fellowman.  The sphere in which he grew to manhood and accomplished his life’s work has been the better for having known him and he enters the future life without fear, secure in the knowledge that what his hand has found to do, has been accomplished to the best of his knowledge and belief.

Death of Mrs. Vogt

Thursday night, following an illness of but a few days, Mrs. Hedwig Vogt, wife of Fritz Vogt, died at the family home on Colorado Street.  The untimely death of this good lady has caused many hearts to ache, and the sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved husband, the two sons, one a child of two years, and other relatives.

Mrs. Vogt, whose maiden name was Sladczyk, was the daughter of Captain Sladczyk of Bluff and was loved by her legion of friends.  She was married to Fritz Vogt, December 21, 1892.  Few knew of her illness, and her death came as a shock.  Everything that mortals could do was done; and as a last resort a hospital surgeon was requested to come, but reached her too late.

Saturday afternoon the remains were laid to their last rest place in the new cemetery, and a very large number of relatives and friends being in attendance.  The foral tributes were numerous and beautiful.

John Vogt

Thursday of last week when the Legion Buddies were carrying out their program of Armistice Day celebration, Johnny – we know him better by that name – came upon the scene and was slapped on the back by the buddies, all of whom were glad to greet him and bid him enjoy himself with his old comrades.  Little knew these Buddies, or Johnny that he was walking in the shadow of the scythe and that he may wander too close.

Saturday, in the courthouse, second floor, at the office of John Schroeder of the Fayette County Abstract Company, Johnny was stricken and immediately lost the power of his right side, arm, and leg.  He was taken to the home of his father, Fritz Vogt, and given every attention; Sunday morning the contemplated visit to the Legion Hospital at Kerrville was abandoned, his condition would not permit.  He was taken to the La Grange Hospital and every care and attention given.  He joined his former buddies who had traveled down the lane, Sunday night.

Johnny Vogt was born near Cedar in the western section of Fayette county, and was the eldest son of Fritz Vogt; he served during the world war and after the armistice was signed returned to La Grange where he engaged in business for several years.  He was, for a number of years unable to travel about as was his wont, due to an affliction to his limb, but with a patience most commendable he carried on and finally overcame the handicap.

He was united in marriage with Mrs. Mozelle Hughes in January 1936, who survives him; his father, Fritz Vogt and a brother Harry, also survive.  Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, with interment at the new cemetery; services were held at the Koenig Funeral Home by Rev. Guy B. Duff, and with Legion escort were conveyed to the cemetery.  At the grave his Masonic brethren and the Legion Buddies officiated.

In Memory of John Vogt

When the visit of the death angel was made to the home of John Vogt, near Cedar, last week, Tuesday, September 14, 1909, the spirit of one of Fayette County's oldest and most beloved citizens journeyed to the far-off home to dwell with the great majority who have gone before. The entire vicinage where he was most highly respected and revered was wrapt in sorrow and heartfelt expressions of regret were frequent. John Vogt was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany May 9, 1832, and when a lad of seventeen years emigrated to America, landing at Galveston August 31, 1849.  His journey to Fayette was made in the primitive manner of that time, by ox-wagon.  For several years after his arrival he earned his living by daily labor.  In the year 1857, January 13, he was united in marriage with Miss Franziska Willrich, one of the then popular belles of Cedar.  The ceremony occured at the home of Dr. Dencker, which home still stands and shelters a daughter of the doctor.  After one year's residence at this place, the family removed to the home which was the deceased's until the final call was made and he passed out of the knowledge of earthly matters.  The union was blessed with eight children, one of whom died many years ago.  The seven living are:  Mrs. Hermann Schroeder of Cedar, E. R. Vogt of Schulenburg, Mrs. Fritz Nollkamper of Swiss Alp, George Vogt of Swiss Alp, Fritz Vogt of La Grange, John Vogt of Cedar and Mrs. Ernst Knigge of La Grange.  Seventeen grand children and one great grandchild also mourn the loss of good old Papa Vogt.  Wednesday morning of last week the funeral was held from the old homestead and the remains, followed by an immense cortege, were conveyed to the Cedar Cemetery and laid to rest with beautiful and impressive ceremonies.  Rev. Kern, pastor of the Lutheran Church at Swiss Alp, spoke of the good qualities of the deceased and commited his spirit to the care of the Maker.  Judge Willrich, who is related to the family, also spoke at the grave dwelling on the ennobling life led by his relative.  Mr. Vogt was one of the Texas Confederate soldiers.  At the last reunion, held here in May, he was unable to take part.  At a former reunion the remaining soldiers of what once was a strong company were photographed.  There were not many present but the picture shows the faces of determined men.  It was this picture the writer was shown when he last visited the home of the deceased.  He cherished this with the pride characteristic of the grizzeled old veterans of today, who, in their youth, shouldered their muskets in a cause they believed right.  It was at that time I learned to know more of Grandpa Vogt and to love him for his goodness of heart and his consideration for the wants and rights of others.  He is gone now sleeping that long sleep that knows no awakening, but which is recorded as being the rest from which we will all arise some sweet day to share the blessing of the Messiah.

ONE MORE WAS NEEDED

Death Loves Ever The Shining Mark - Miss Vogt

Monday night the news came from Schulenburg that Miss Olivia Vogt aged twenty‑six years, daughter of Mrs. Geo. Vogt had been claimed by the grim reaper.  Known here, where she had numerous relatives and friends, as a sweetly disposed, pure good young woman, her being called hence occasioned much sorrow.

Since the death of her father, Geo. Voght - who passed to his reward in August 1917 - and the continued illness of her mother, Miss Olivia has mothered her little sisters, her kind ministrations, unselfish sacrifices for the comfort of those so near and dear to her bound to her more closely the already strong ties of love and friendship of relative and friend.

She became ill last week but the indomitable energy encouraged, prevented recognition by her of her affliction until the dread influenza had fastened its hold, and pneumonia followed to complete the work of destruction. True, we are told that death loves a shining mark, we see it here exemplified. None knew her but to love her, none loved her but to know her as she was.

Our sincerest sympathy is offered to her saddened mother, her sisters and brother and other relatives.  He who has calmed the stormy waters, and returned a placid sea, should lighten the sorrow; may He comfort them.

ALEX ROSENBERG PASSES

The unexpected announcement was made Wednesday morning that Alex Rosenberg, living in the old W. W. Ligon home north of the city had died during the early hours. He had received a dose of medicine administered by Mrs. Rosenberg at three o'clock, and both drifted back to slumber. When Mrs. Rosenberg awoke after dawn, she made the alarming discovery that her husband had journeyed on. It is presumed he was dead for several hours when the discovery was made.

Mr. Rosenberg was born at Round Top, October 27, 1857, and was a son of Eugene and Dora Rosenberg, early settlers of that section. He was reared in that section of the county, and on April 8, 1880 he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Weyand of Nassau at Round Top by Squire Henkel. To this union there was born six children, George. Albert, Louise, wife of Pete Jurasek of El Paso; Alex. Jr., Max and Leona. The sons all reside at LaGrange.

The widow and children with the exception of Leona who died several years ago, survive; he also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Geo. Vogelsang of Shelby and Mrs. Elisha Adams of Lake Victor, and eleven grandchildren. The family first lived at Nassau, later at Burton and for the past twenty-eight years LaGrange has been their home. Mr. Rosenberg was active in promoting real estate in La Grange, and from him the Fair Grounds was purchased. He caused many new homes to be built in that section, and was the holder of considerable real estate. Last April, the entire family was re-united, the occasion being the golden wedding anniversary of the parents.

The funeral will be held Friday day morning at 9:30 o'clock from the family residence, with interment at the new cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is offered to the surviving relatives.

THEODORA SACK VON ROSENBERG

La Grange Deutsche Zeitung
March 31, 1904, p. 5

Translated from the original German by Charles Patrick, January, 2001:

Theodora Anna Henriette von Rosenberg

Theodora Anna Henriette von Rosenberg passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. on Monday morning. March 21, 1904. Theodora Anna Henriette was the wife of F. von Rosenberg. Her maiden name was Sack and she was born on May 7, 1829 in Düsseldorf in the German province of Westphalia where she also obtained a solid education. In 1849 she immigrated to Texas, first settling near Round Top and later becoming a resident there in 1859. Theodora Anna Henriette Sack first marriage was to Wilhelm von Roeder. To this union was born a daughter Marie von Roeder, who preceded her mother in death many years ago. Wilhelm von Roeder died when his daughter Marie was still a young child. The deceased married her second husband Eugen von Rosenberg on December 17, 1853, To this union, which lasted over 50 years, the following children were born: Hermann von Rosenberg of Round Top, Alex von Rosenberg of La Grange, Anna, the wife of Geroge Vogelsang of Shelby, Eugenie, the wife of E. 0. Adams of Burnet County, and Clara. the wife of Adolph Kopisch of Bellville. The last mentioned daughter passed away last year. The deceased is survived by her husband, two sons, two daughters, 30 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren as well as a large number of friends.

Burial was in the Florida Chapel Cemetery approximately one mile from Round Top. The graveside funeral service was conducted by Reverend Bracher. In addition, the Round Top mixed choir sang two songs. The large number of people who attended the burial, one of the largest number ever seen in the area, attested to the high regard in which the deceased was held. Relatives such as Alex and Paul Meerscheidt of San Antonio, Miss Minna von Rosenberg and Miss Nora Goldstein both of Austin, whom Mrs. von Rosenberg raised as children, as well as almost all of her relatives from La Grange were present to pay their last respects.

The deceased was a very well educated woman who gave instruction in both piano and voice in Round Top for over 40 years. For many years Mrs. von Rosenberg was the director of the Round Top mixed choir, a group that performed on many occasions between 1876 and 1880, after which time they eventually disbanded. Despite this, she gladly continued to sing and play music as her health permitted until her death. Without a doubt there are many citizens of Round Top who can state that she was the strongest supporter of music and song there. She was also considered to be an able German housewife, having raised not only exemplary daughters but also sons who are considered to be upstanding citizens. All those who had the pleasure of knowing her will not soon forget her. May she rest in peace. —by F., March 27. 1904, Round Top, Texas
