PIONEER CITIZEN OF BLACK JACK SECTION PASSES AWAY

Julius Oeding, one of the pioneer citizens of the Black Jack section passed quietly away at his family residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Deceased had reached the ripe old age of 72 years.

He spent the greater part of his life in the Black Jack section where he made a friend of every one with whom he came in contact.  Everyone always spoke of Julius Oeding as being one of the finest, straightest gentlemen they had ever known.  He was a good farmer, industrious always, through his application and foresight he was able to accumulate considerable of this worlds goods in addition to rearing eleven splendid children.

He will be greatly missed not only by his bereaved relatives but also by his thousands of friends.

The body was laid to its final resting place in Black Jack Cemetery Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock, Rev. Richter officiating.  The funeral was a very large one, attesting to the popularity of this good man.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Louise Mueller Oeding, his four daughters, Mrs. Louis Steinmann, Mrs. Hermann Grasshoff, Mrs. Louis Herzik, and Miss Louise Oeding, by seven sons, namely: Paul, Tom, John, Eddie, Louie, Walter and Elmer, a number of grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

To them the Sticker tenders its sincere sympathy in this their great sorrow.

MRS. LOUISE OEDING, 82 PASSED AWAY SATURDAY

Mrs. Louise Oeding, aged 82 years, six months and eighteen days, passed away at her home in La Grange, Saturday night following a short illness.

Mrs. Oeding, who was a lifelong resident of Fayette County, lived almost all her life in the Freyburg area.  She was before her marriage, Miss Louise Mueller, of Bethany, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mueller.

She was united in marriage to Julius Oeding and they lived in the Freyburg area where they were active in the religious and civic affairs of that community.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church at Black Jack.

Mr. Oeding preceded her in death in 1927, and in 1934 Mrs. Oeding moved to La Grange and made that place her home until the time of her passing.

Her husband and four children preceded her in death.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Millie Herzik of La Grange, Miss Elise Oeding, who made her home with her mother in La Grange, and Mrs. Herman (Ida) Grasshoff and Mrs. Louis (Marie) Steinmann of Schulenburg; five sons, John and Ed Oeding of Houston, Louis and Elmer Oeding of La Grange, and Walter Oeding of Freyburg; four sisters, Mrs. Henry Gebert and Mrs Louis Gebert of near La Grange, Mrs. Bertha Gebert of Flatonia, and Mrs. Frances Moebus of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Surviving also are fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 P.M., from the Koenig Funeral Home in La Grange with interment in the Black Jack cemetery.  Rev. Erhard Eilers, pastor of the Lutheran Church at Black Jack and Swiss Alp, officiated.

Pall Bearers were Earl Grasshoff, Floyd Steinmann, Bruce Byles, Archie Oeding, John Koenig, Lloyd Dippel, and Elmo Lampe.

To those who mourn the passing of this pioneer Christian mother we extend our sincere sympathy.

MARGARET NANCY "GRETCHEN" MUNKE OEDING

FUNERAL FOR MRS. OEDING HERE SUNDAY

Mrs. Margaret Oeding, retired nurse of La Grange, passed away at Fayette Memorial Hospital Friday.  She was 81.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Koenig Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Arlyn J. Hausmann officiating, and burial was in the Black Jack Cemetery.

Mrs. Oeding was born at Ammansville on January 18, 1890, daughter of Joseph and Marie Albrecht Munke, and was united in marriage with Paul Edwin Oeding at Ammansville on January 10, 1910.  Her husband preceded Mrs. Oeding in death in 1938, as did her son Felix Oeding and youngest daughter, Mae Oeding Carby.

Mrs. Oeding was employed as a nurse at Fayette Memorial Hospital here for more than 20 years before retiring.

Surviving her are her daughter, Mrs. John (Elva) Oeding Koenig of Black Jack Springs, a son, Archie Oeding of Freyburg, 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

PAUL OEDING

PAUL OEDING, PROMINENT FREYBURG FARMER, PASSES ON

The relatives and many friends of Paul Oeding were chocked and grieved at his sudden death last Sunday morning, which occurred at his home in the Freyburg section.  He was apparently in good health, having been in Schulenburg Saturday attending to business matters.  Having a pain in his chest and arm he went to his family physician, but thinking it not serious, he went on with his duties.  After a restless night, he was up and about in the morning.  He fell suddenly as he was taking his medicine.  A doctor was immediately called but Mr. Oeding passed away before the physician arrived.

Deceased was born near Black Jack fifty-six years ago, last January 7th [1882], and grew to young manhood there.    When a young man he worked on a railroad in Kansas for a number of years and later he and a brother operated a bottling works in Yoakum.  Preferring a more peaceful life, he decided to farm.  About 28 years ago, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Munke, of Ammansville.  To this union two sons and two daughters were born.

Mr. Oeding was a splendid man, everyone who knew him admired and respected him for his many fine qualities.  He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and his passing brought sadness to the entire community.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, July 4th, at 4 P.M., from the family residence with interment in the Black Jack cemetery.  Rev. F.E. Eilers officiated.  The funeral was a large one and the many flowers were mute evidence of the love and friendship in which he was held.

One son, Felix, his father, two brothers and one sister preceded him to the Great Beyond.  Surviving are his grief-stricken wife, two daughters, Mrs. John (Elva) Koenig of Black Jack and Mrs. Werner (Mae) Carby of Swiss Alp, one son, Archie, who is still at home.  Also his mother, Mrs. Julius Oeding of La Grange; five brothers, John and Ed of Houston, Walter of Freyburg, Louis and Elmer of La Grange, four sisters, Miss Elise Oeding and Mrs. Millie Herzik of La Grange, Mrs. Louis Steinmann and Mrs. Herman Grasshoff of Schulenburg, and four grandchildren.

The many friends of the family extend sincere sympathy in the loss of a beloved husband and father.

Funeral services for Edmund Johnnie “Bull” Oeltjen, 82, of Plum are set for 10:30 am Tuesday, Aug. 30 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie Valley with Rev. Lynnae Sorenson officiating. Interment will follow in the Prairie Valley Church Cemetery.

Oeltjen died Sunday, Aug. 29 in a La Grange nursing home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1922 in the Prairie Valley Community of Fayette County, the son of Anton and Erna (Marquart) Oeltjen. He married Vera Louise Hauschild on April 3, 1949. A heavy equipment operator for many years for the late V.A. (Boss) Hrbacek, he was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, especially since he was wheelchair bound since 1985.

Survivors include one daughter, Lanice and husband Louis Bertsch of Plum; three grandchildren, Loren Bertsch and fiancée Amy Sivek of Prairie Valley, Landry Bertsch and Wife Melanie of Plum and Lauri Anzaldua and husband Bryan of Lockhart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Larry Hauschild; one sister and brother-in-law Anita Dunk and husband Wilford; one brother, Leon Oeltjen; and two infant brothers.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church or Prairie Valley Church Cemetery Association.

John Oeltjendiers, 64, Buried Friday at La Grange

Funeral services for John Oeltjendiers, 64, Fayette county farmer and brother of Fritz Oeltjendiers of Weimar, were held Friday afternoon, Feb. 2, at St. Paul's Lutheran church, La Grange, with burial in the city cemetery there.

He died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 31, in Fayette Memorial Hospital, three [days] short of his 64th birthday annniversary.

Born Feb. 3, 1898, in Germany, Mr. Oeltjendiers was 4 years old when his parents, John and Johanna Oeltjendiers, brought him to this country, settling in the Holman community. He married Miss Lenora Schwegmann at Columbus on April 12, 1938.

She survives, along with a son, Henry Oeltjendiers of La Grange; two sisters, Mrs. Sophie Ripper of Schulenburg and Miss Lena Oeltjendiers of Kansas; and two brothers, August Oeltjendiers of La Grange and Fritz Oeltjendiers here.

Old Time Settler of Holman Section Dies

News reached this city Tuesday morning of the death of Mr. John D. Oeltjendiers, old time settler of the Holman section, after an illness of six weeks. His death occurred late Monday evening. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, interment taking place in the Brandt burying ground near Holman, with Rev. Moebes of LaGrange officiating. The funeral was largely attended, showing the high regard in which Mr. Oeltjendiers was held by his neighbors of the Holman community.

Mr. Oeltjendiers was born in Oldenburg, Germany, and was in his 80th year at time of death. He came to this country with his good wife (now deceased) and four children in 1902. The family first resided in the Weimar section, but afterward moved to Fayette county, in the vicinity of Holman, where he resided up to the time of his death. Mr. Oeltjendiers is survived by three sons and two daughters, as follows: Mr. Fritz Oeltjendiers of Weimar, Mr. John Oeltjendiers of Schulenburg, Mr. August Oeltjendiers of Trinity Hill, Fayette county, Mrs. Sophie Ripper of Schulenburg and Miss Lena Oeltjendiers of Holman. He also has a brother living in Germany.

Mr. Oeltjendiers was a quiet, good citzien, peaceable, law-abiding, a kind husband and father, a neighbor who loved to help others, and his passing is noted with sincere regret. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his bereaved ones.

Pvt. Oeltjendiers of La Grange Reburied

LaGrange, Mar. 22.— Reburial rites for Pvt. Johnnie C. Oeltjendiers, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Oeltjendiers of La Grange were held Tuesday afternoon at the Koenig Funeral Home chapel and the Trinity Hill Lutheran Church. Rev. O. Bahr officiated and interment was in the church cemetery.

Oeltjendiers died at Zamai Shima, Ryukyu Islands, on April 11, 1945, at the age of 22.

Besides his parents, he leaves one brother, Elo, who is stationed in Okinawa, and one sister, Mrs. J. Biehle of Warda.

Dennis Ohnheiser

Dennis Otto Ohnheiser, 66, of Seguin died Thursday, Feb. 26 after a lengthy illness.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1942 in Fayette County, the second child and eldest son of Otto and Henriette Marie (Jochen) Ohnheiser. He attended Schulenburg public schools and earned his bachelor of arts degree at Texas Lutheran University. Following his graduation, he remained in Seguin where he owned and operated Fidelity Loans Inc. until the time of his death.

Mr. Ohnheiser was preceded in death by his parents; by his elder son, Anthony Ohnheiser; his father-in-law, Harry H. Frazier; and two brothers-in-law, Charles Bielke of Marion and Harry H. Frazier Jr. of Killeen.

He is survived by his son, Dennis Wade Ohnheiser and wife Lavonne of Seguin; and two grandchildren, USAF SrA Isaac K. Ohnheiser and wife Jenny of Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., and Megan C. Ohnheiser of Seguin. He is also survived by his sister, Mariann Bielke of Marion; his brother, Kent D. Ohnheiser and wife Shirley of Schulenburg; his brother, Stanley A. Ohnheiser and wife Virginia of Weimar; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 3 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Rev. Lemae Higgs of United Evangelical Lutheran Church at Swiss Alp, where Mr. Ohnheiser was a lifetime member, was slated to officiate at the funeral service on Wednesday, March 4 at 9 a.m. at Goetz Memorial Chapel followed by a brief service at United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Swiss Alp at noon. A reception at the church hall was slated to follow the interment in the church cemetery. Named as pallbearers were nephews Garth Bielke of New Braunfels and David Ohnheiser of Montgomery and nephews-in-law Don Dilworth of San Antonio and Russ Juno of La Grange.

Arrangements were under the direction of Goetz Funeral Home of Seguin.

FLATONIA - Laddie James Okruhlik, 81, of Flatonia, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003.

He was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Flatonia, to the late Rudolph and Amalia Jasek Okruhlik. He was a farmer and rancher and member of St.

Mary's Catholic Church in Praha and KJT.

Survivors: wife, Evelyn Wotipka Okruhlik; daughters, Patricia Marshall of Moody, Myra Jean Robinson of Flatonia and Lynette

Okruhlik of Sweeny; sisters, Martha Clisbee of Jacksonville and Mollie Peters of Kingwood; and three grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: three sisters; and five brothers.

A rosary will be recited 6:30 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Praha Catholic Church, the Rev. Edward Bartsch officiating.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Flatonia. Smith Funeral Home, Flatonia, 361-865-3311.

Albert Olsovsky Buried at St. John

Albert Olsovsky, age 62 years and ten days, passed away at the family residence early Friday morning, December 4, 1953. He had not been ill prior to his death.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 5, at 9:00 o’clock in the morning from the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home with continued services at the St. John Catholic Church at 9:30. Rev. Albert Maneth officiated and interment was in the St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Olsovsky was born in November of 1891, the son of the late Frank and Rosie Olsovsky, who lived in the Moravia section. On October 22, 1912, he married Miss Emilie Motal at Hallettsville and the couple settled in the St. John section, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of the St. John Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emilie Motal Olsovsky, one daughter, Mrs. Julius (Agnes) Schramek of St. John, and one son, Adolph Olsovsky of Schulenburg; three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Millie) Surovec, Ganado; Mrs. Jerry (Angelina) Trlicek, Bay City; Mrs. Jim (Julia) Baros, El Campo; six brothers, Alfred, Bill, Frank, Robert and Eddie Olsovsky, Ganado; Henry Olsovsky, San Antonio and a half-brother, Edmund Olsovsky, Ganado. Three grandchildren and a step-mother and four step-sisters also survive. A sister, Mrs. Jim (Emma) Orsak of San Angelo preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were Bill, Robert, and Frank Olsovsky, Jerry Trlicek, Jim Baros and Victor Barborak.

... There were two funerals here last Saturday.  Chas. Olsowsky's two year old boy died and was buried in the St. John cemetery.  John Zapalac, Jr. of Velehrad died Friday and was buried Saturday in the Praha cemetery.  He left a wife with five little children.

SOLDIER FOUND DEAD UNDER CAR

LA GRANGE, Texas, Sept. 30. Henry Onken Jr., was found dead under an overturned automobile, pinned to the ground by the fender, Sunday afternoon two miles east of Rutersville. Onken was alone in the car and on his way home. No one saw the accident and the condition of tthe body indicated that life had been extinct for several hours. He was recently drafted and had come home on a furlough intending to return to Camp Travis Sunday night. His father is a prominent farmer in this county and lives at Park.

Mrs. John (Edith) Osina, 85, of Schulenburg passed away Saturday at Youens Memorial Hospital in Weimar.

Funeral services were set for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church in Schulenburg with burial in the Holman Catholic Cemetery and the Rev. Eugene Jenson officiating.

A daughter of the late John and Johanna (Holub) Steffek, Mrs. Osina was born June 13, 1898 in Ammannsville.  She was united in marriage with John A. Osina on October 28, 1919 at Ammannsville.  They resided in the Holman area until Mr. Osina’s death on July 21, 1969, then Mrs. Osina moved to Schulenburg.  She was a member of the Christian Mothers and the KJZT at Holman.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Lillie) Kossa of Schulenburg; four sisters, Mrs. Elsie Kubesch of Weimar, Mrs. Otilia Berta and Miss Lillie Steffeck of Needville and Mrs. Vlasta Marek of Austin.

She was preceded in death by a son, who died during World War II; three brothers, Edward, Fred and Herman Steffek; one sister, Mathilda Adamcik; her son-in-law, Eugene Kossa; and a grandson who died in infancy.

T-5 Ladik J. Osina Killed in Action In Germany Feb. 11

T-3 Ladik J. Osina, 23, was killed in action in Germany on February 11, according to a cablegram received from the War Department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Osina of the Holman section.

The parents received the following message Feb. 27: "The secretary of war desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Technician Fifth Grade Ladik J. Osina, has been missing in action since Feb. 11th in Germany. If further details or other information are received you will be promptly notified. Adjutant General."

On March 6 the following message was received: "The secretary of war asks that I assure you of his deep sympathy in the loss of your son, TEchnician Fifth Grade Ladik J. Osina, who was previously reported missing in action. Report now received states he was killed in action Feb. 11 in Germany. Confirming letter follows. Adjutant Gerneral."

T-5 Osina was born at Holman on October 13, 1921. He had been in the service about two and one-half years, over four months of this time being served oversears. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Osina; one sister, Mrs. Lillie Kossa of Weimar.

The Mercury extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives in the loss of their son and brother.

AUGUST OTTO

DIED SATURDAY

August Otto died at the family home here Saturday, after a long illness. At the time of his death he was sixty-seven years old. He is survived by his wife and a large family of grown children. Interment was held at the new cemetery Monday afternoon.

Bernice L. Otto, 83, of Schulenburg, formerly of Pasadena, died August 2nd, 1996 in Colorado-Fayette Medical Center, Weimar.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5 in the Koenig-Peel & Strickland Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will be in the Cedar Cemetery.  Mrs. Otto was born May 28, 1914 in the O’Quinn Community, a daughter of the late Julius and Adele (Loessin) Vogt.  She was united in marriage with Fred T. Otto in Schulenburg in 1936.  Mrs. Otto was a retired cafeteria worker with Pasadena Schools and was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church.  Surviving are one daughter: Darlis and her husband Dale Adams of Mineral Wells; two sons: Darryl Otto and his wife Judy of Houston and Gary Otto and his wife Sandra of Manvel; one sister; Elvern Barton and her husband Emil of Schulenburg; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 1967, a brother Raymond Vogt and two sisters: Elmae Hermann and Irene Studlar.  Memorial contributions made to the Alzheimers Foundation or to the American Diabetes Assn.

Gary Todd Otto, 64, died Saturday, Dec. 2 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. at Scott Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rob Harbin officiating.  Graveside service and burial was held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Black Jack Springs Cemetery in La Grange.  He was born March 22, 1942 in Schulenburg and was a Manvel resident for the past 27 years.  He was a Lutheran by faith.  Survivors include his wife, Sandra Otto of Manvel; daughters, Regina Lawrence and husband Mark of Phoenix, Ariz.; Kari Emblem and husband Erik of Waco; and Mindy Otto of The Woodlands; sons, Jeffry Otto and wife Laura of Rosharon, Kevin Otto of Nederland, and Casey Otto of College Station; sister, Darlis Adams and husband Dale of Crosby; brother, Darryl Otto and wife Judy of Houston; 10 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Fred and Bernice (Vogt) Otto.  Memorials should be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 15186, Austin, Tx. 78761 or Black Jack Cemetery Association.  Scott Family Funeral Home of Alvin was in charge of arrangements.
